Charleston, West Virginia – The 2010 Wishbones for Pets charity drive runs from October 15 through Thanksgiving to benefit animal charities. This year Kim Walton of Critter Sitters,LLC will be collecting donation items such as blankets, toys, leashes, collars, pet food and monetary gifts to benefit the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter.
Established in 2004 by Janet Depathy of Under My Wings Pet Sitting in Plymouth, Washington with the first donation of goods and cash given to the Friends of the Plymouth Pound, Wishbones for Pets has increased in popularity. Run by professional pet sitters in North America and similar to Toys for Tots,(except for animal welfare) barrels are set out at participating locations for friends, families, and groups to donate goods for the benefit of chosen animal charities.
“Months ago I read in the Charleston newspapers that the Kanawha-Charleston shelter was hurting for donations,” explained Walton.”Businesses have been cutting back on monetary donations and even keeping their ripped pet food bags and just taping them up to sell at a discount, and I know the shelters need help. I have known Donna Clark, the shelter’s director for several years, and thought this would be a great opportunity to help her to help the animals.”
Walton is hardly new to animal rescue.Starting her pet-sitting service in 2006, she has been an active participant in many animal welfare endeavors. She has fostered animals; most recently bottle fed an orphaned kitten. Her other passion is saving horses, and Walton recently rescued an appaloosa mare and foal destined for a Canadian slaughter plant.
To date, Walton states four generous sponsors have stepped up for the animals. They are Bayer Crop Science Industrial Park, Dow, Capitol Mini Storage – Dunbar, and Dana Parsons. Bayer and Dow have donated 31 barrels for use as donation bins, and Capitol Storage has donated a storage area to use for all donations while the fundraiser is active. Parsons is helping to monitor the barrel sites with Walton. “We have twenty-eight locations spread over eight cities, and Dana’s help is much appreciated,” explained Walton.
Kanawha Valley businesses are needed to serve as donation drop-off locations for pet supplies. Critter Sitters LLC will provide donation boxes and barrels, and the name of each business will appear on all advertising and promotional items related to the Wishbones for Pets programs. Business owners interested in helping can contact Critter Sitters LLC at (304) 531-9572 or via email at email@example.com. All charitable cash donations should be made directly out to the Kanawha-Charleston Animal Shelter and sent c/o Kim Walton, P.O. Box 95, Ravenswood, WV 26164
