A few weeks ago as Meg Whitman was surging in the polls up popped an October surprise. The infamous attorney Gloria Allred turned at a news conference with a tearful Nicky Diaz at her side. Allred called Whitman on the carpet for outrageous treatment of her client.
According to Meg Whitman, “Nicky was like a member of the family.
According to Diaz, Whitman distanced herself from Diaz, “I was shocked and hurt that Ms. Whitman would treat me this way after nine years. I realized at that moment that she didn’t appreciate my work. I felt like she was throwing me away like a piece of garbage.”
In last night’s debate, at California’s Dominican University in San Rafael, moderator Tom Brokaw noted, “You say you have to punish businesses and individuals that hire undocumented or ‘illegal’ immigrants. How do you expect a business to know if you did not know what you had at home?”
For her part, Whitman says they took the appropriate steps in hiring Nicky. She reminded Brokaw that Nicky “falsified documents, and showed them three forms of ID. “ She said it, “Broke her heart to let her go, this is a reason we need an e-verify system.”Whitman reminded Brokaw,
They went through a reputable employment agency.
They asked for proof she was legal.
She provided a Social Security card, and Driver’s license.
When her husband received a letter from Social Security stating that Nicky SSN was wrong, Meg’s husband wrote on the letter and gave it to her. The instructions were clear. “Nicky straighten this out.”
Nine years later and apparently no more letters from the government, it would seem reasonable to the Whitman’s that the problem had long since been taken care of.
But there is another side to this incident. Consider that an illegal, has come to this country. She has obtained a Driver’s License and with another person’s SSN perpetrates a fraud. And then has the unmitigated gall to accuse her employer of treating her like garbage, while paying her $23.00 an hour. Nicky is not an individual case. The North County Times reports there are nearly three million illegal aliens here working and living in California. During the 1960s Governor Ronald Reagan supported the Bracero Program where Mexicans could register with the US government and come here legally to work the agricultural seasons. Programs like this are not favored by local latino groups.
