The single most irritating thing about the current Presidential administration is its preening hypocrisy.
Whether or not you agreed with the President’s policies, you might at least respect him were his principles consistent. Instead, Americans have a chief executive who consistently speaks sweet nothings out of one side of his mouth while robbing you blind with the other hand…
Claims to be post-racial while playing the race card against opponents for political gain. Scolds the Supreme Court for allowing corporate cash into elections while taking more corporate money than any candidate ever and thus effectively killing campaign finance reform. The list goes on.
Now, the Democratic Party, under the direction of the White House, has launched a desperate campaign sliming Rep. John Boehner for his ties to lobbyists.
Boehner will become the 61st Speaker of the House once Republicans wipe the floor with Democrats in the elections. The idea behind painting Boehner as a lobbyist shill is the hope that his corruption would scare away the vaunted Reagan conservative- / Hillary centrist- Democrats and independents.
Perhaps, the White House thinking goes, the scaremongering would salvage some seats on election night, or at least making the returns less horrific and save some face.
Thus, snarky playground doughboy and punching bag turned White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs pushing a New York Times hitjob on Boehner that emphasized his reputation as an indolent political hack with a bad Jersey-orange tan who lazes about town spending leisure time with cocktail party lobbyists.
Tweeted Gibbs gleefully, ‘Headline says it all… A G.O.P. Leader Tightly Bound to Lobbyists.’
A horror to be sure. Boehner is indeed your conventional D.C. establishment douche. He will find no sympathy here. The rub is that the lobbyist connections of Gibbs’s boss – and those of their flailing party – are demonstrably worse than Boehner’s are.
There are at least fifty lobbyists or ex-lobbyists in the President’s cabinet, including four members of the President’s cabinet and his chief of staff. The New York Times caught the White House holding lobbyist visits at coffee shops to keep them off the official White House schedule and out of public record.
Sneaky, cynical, hypocritical, and typical of Democratic party since its infiltration by the Chicago political cesspool.
Congressional Democrats are no better. According to independent watchdog group Open Secrets, of the top twenty members of Congress who have received lobbyist funding for the midterm elections, fifteen are Democrats. Number one? Harry Reid. The guy named Boehner is not on the list.
And of the top sixty House members receiving lobbyist money, forty-five are Democrats. Number one among them is House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland). Current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi ranks highly as well. Again, none of this dubious top sixty are named Boehner.
Looking at the list, it becomes clear why Democrats sold out real health care reform to lobbyists from Big Pharma and Big Health. The party is overrun with lobbyists.
Whatever you think of Boehner, and whatever you think of lobbyist influence, agree that Democrats need to shut up about the lobbyist ties of others until after they break-up with the lobbyists with whom they share their beds. You know, remove the plank from thine own eye, and all that jazz.
