One of the most beautiful country sides you can ride through surrounds the city of Shipshewanna, IN. The two lane black top roads are lined with impeccable white houses and barns owned by the many Amish families the live in the Northeastern Indiana community. The city of Shipshewanna is small and quaint, but most areas have turned their attentions to the tourists that invade the little city for it’s Amish attractions and it’s “Midwest’s largest flee market”.
Mostly flat, there are nice rides in every direction out of Shipshewanna to the surrounding little cities. It’s easy to ride 30-40 miles and take in Amish life without leaving your bike. Depending on the day and the time of the year, you can ride past carriage after carriage of Amish families going to and from town taking their wares to market. A barn raising can be witnessed here and there and during harvest it’s quite fascinating to watch the corn crops being harvested by young men working together with a team of spirited draft horses.
The most amazing revelation of Shipshewanna? Scores of Amish riders from very young to very old cruising down the highways on their conventional or recumbent bicycles. The people are friendly and outwardly happy. Everyone waves and the children stop what their doing when you ride by to extend a very warm smile and cheery “hello”.
Shipshewanna, IN. A really nice place to take a slower paced ride.
Oh one last thing to consider…..There are a lot of fresh obstacles left in the road by the horses.
