What My Cat Has Taught Me About Life, Meditations for Cat Lovers, by Niki Anderson, Honor Books, 2007, 192 Pages, ISBN-10: 1562929429 $19.99
Niki Anderson, multi-book author from Spokane Washington, shares what she calls “divine instruction” in What My Cat Has Taught Me. Lessons God taught her through several generations of furry, kitty friends who claimed her as their owner. Fascinated with cats from her earliest memories, she suspects she said “cat” before she said “mommy.”
In addition to her love for all things feline, Anderson’s mother taught her to worship an all-knowing, all-powerful God, whom she came to love at an early age. Today, she uses her writing to teach others about God’s love. She hopes this insightful, inspirational gift book reminds and encourages readers to meditate on the Lord, while taking a brief look at life from a cat’s-eye-view.
Anderson first released, What My Cat Has Taught Me About Life, in 1997. That edition featured three tabby brothers, named Earl, Murray, and Myles. This book of meditations features Myles, and Claw-dia, a Maine Coon kitten. Colorful real-life pictures of several generations of cats Anderson loved as a child, read about, or lived with as house mates, comprise each two-page spread.
Forty-five meditations include a true cat story, colorful photographs, “purr-sonal” application, companion Scripture, one-sentence quote, humorous quip, and a short veterinarian inspired cat-care tip. Topics covered include taming the tongue, encouragement to be a peacemaker, how to keep secrets, our choice of attitudes, and many others.
Hilda, a stray calico who became a legendary mountain climber when she repeatedly scaled the Swiss Alps in the early 1900’s is one meditation. Hilda followed after climbers until she finally settled into a new home at 9,000 feet; a mountaineer club’s shelter where a guard fed her. Sometime later Hilda accompanied a climbing group all the way to the summit, a 12,038-foot peak and from then on she gained an international reputation as Switzerland’s mountain climbing cat. This meditation teaches faith can conquer the highest peaks with the encouragement that “nothing is ‘im-paws-ible’ with God.” Matthew 19:26 “With God all things are possible,” is the companion Scripture.
The “Paws for Prayer” asks God to “open my ears to hear and my heart to respond to your highest calls.” The cat-care tip explains that cats fight when they’re in heat, or their territories are invaded.
This simple, thoughtful book, filled with “play-on-words,” shows cats at their incredible, mysterious best. Or as one writer said, “… whenever you need a touch of inspiration you’re sure to find a paw-full of practical, sensible counsel that’ll have you purring in no time!
