Portland MMA enthusiasts and fans were treated to a free public workout with Team Alpha Male members, and WEC superstars, Joseph Benavidez and Urijah Faber. The duo were in town on Thursday, Sept. 16 shooting the second of two Amp Energy Juice Bootcamp Series videos as well as a free public workout at Xtreme Edge Fitness in Beaverton.
The former WEC featherweight champion, “The California Kid” Urijah Faber is one of the most recognizable and popular figures in the MMA world today. Sometimes called the WEC poster-boy, Faber held the 145 lb. championship for over two years, cementing himself into the Mixed Martial Arts landscape. Faber has integrated his superb collegiate wrestling into his relentless fighting style and is known for his excellent conditioning as well. Faber’s next fight will be at bantamweight (135 lbs.) when he takes on Japanese striker Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 52 on November 11.
Top WEC bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez is quickly making a name for himself, in and outside of the octagon. The Team Alpha Male standout has amassed a 12-2 professional fight record, with seven wins coming via submission, three by knockout, and only two by decision. In what most fans consider his most memorable fight, Benavidez defeated former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres via submission. Benavidez is coming off of a split-decision loss to current WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz but promises to be back in the octagon as soon as possible.
I was on hand, live and in person, for the Amp Energy Juice Bootcamp Series shoot as well as the public workout. After observing, meeting, and talking with both Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez, I cannot say enough nice things about these two superstars. Always smiling and seemingly enjoying themselves, both fighters come off as genuinely down-to-earth people. They truly do appreciate all of their fans, so much so in fact, that both Urijah and Joseph literally gave away the shirts off their backs after the workout. They made sure everyone that wanted a photo, autograph, or just to meet them got exactly that, even though it ran longer than the scheduled time allotted.
I have met scores of fighters, professional and amateur, the majority of whom were all nice guys or girls. Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez definitely fall into that majority and then some. Both of these young men are perfect examples of what professional athletes (not just fighters) should aspire to be. After spending the greater part of the day with them, observing their interaction with the fans, their eagerness and willingness to answer any and all questions, etc., there is no doubt as to why both Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez have both become true superstars.
Keep on the lookout for the next article, which will contain an video out-take as well as my interview with Faber and Benavidez.
