Outstanding Florida Waterway
Located in Rainbow Springs state park Florida, this registered natural landmark, K.P. Hole Park is a perfect antidote to the scorching hot Florida summer. Designated in 1987 as an Outstanding Florida Waterway, K.P. Hole County Park is where summertime water lovers from Tampa to Orlando flock to put their tubes and other small water crafts into the cool spring waters of the Rainbow River.
Summer fun seekers soak up some rays and plunge into these waters to swim, snorkel, or dive. Others drift along lazily in a tube basking in the sun and cooling off in the 72 degree waters of the moving river. Tubers can only launch at the Tube Entrance on 9435 SW 190th Avenue Road.
Rainbow River Springs
Rainbow River gets it’s name from the several springs that pump 500 million gallons of clear water at the headwaters down the six mile length of the river. The natural environment of the river is a must see for naturalists, bird watchers, and campers. Wildlife such as hawks, cormorants, egrets, and – to the delight of all onlookers – playful river otters make their home in this habitat of natural beauty.
This aquatic preserve provides perfectly clear sandy river bottom that is mostly covered with current slanted seagrass with patches of sand and river rocks. The river is shallow to about a couple of feet in some areas and in others to a depth of more than 20 feet. Even deeper at Devil’s Elbow. It’s perfect for snorkeling, diving (regulation states that a diver down flag be used), and observing a variety of freshwater fish, such as largemouth bass and bluegill. Wonderful waterway vegetation such as bald cypress’ and hydric hammocks can also be observed throughout your journey.
River Tube Adventure
You can bring your own floatation device or you can rent a tube at K.P. Hole for a fee. However, due to the popularity of the river’s tube adventure, the probability of tubes being available after 9 or 10 am on the weekends is very slim. You can purchase a tube there and fill it with air at an air machine located on site.
Two hour or four hour trips down the river are available. Tube rental is $9 plus tax and includes a shuttle pick up at the tubers exit down river. These services are available from April to the end of September.
The park has ample restrooms, changing areas, and plenty of picnic tables. The wooden launch accommodates large groups of people preparing themselves to embark on a cool summer excursion on the preverbal lazy river.
Be sure NOT to bring any disposables along. You will be checked for this prior to entering the river.
