TURNOVER, TURNOVER AND MORE TURNOVERS
The Titans tied a team record for turnovers in a single game with seven (3 interceptions and 4 fumbles) Sunday agains the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The seven turnovers equaled a mark set in 2000 agains Cleveland at L.P. Field, however the Titans were able to win that game, unlike today.
JOHNSON STOPPED COLD
Chris Johnson who had rushed for 100 yards or more in twelve consecutive games, and needed just two more such performances to tie the NFL record held by Barry Sanders was stopped cold by the Steelers defense.
Johnson was held to his lowest total in three tried agains the Steelers as he rushed 16 times for 34 yards with a long of 11 and a 2.1 yard average.
Johnson did have an 85 yard touchdown run wiped out by a holding call agains Titans center Eugene Amano.
FIRST QUARTER BRAWL
After some early pushing and shoving in the first quarter the two teams became involved in a pier six brwal between the Steelers offense and the Titans defense.
Both sides battled after the conclusion of the Steelers first offensive play, an incompletion on a first down pass from Dennis Dixon intended for Hines Ward.
Tony Brown and Steelers left guard Chris kemoeatu were assessed 15 yard personal foul penalties for their parts in the scuffle.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYS HURT TEAM AGAIN
The Steelers were able to take advantage of a special teams mistake on the opening kickoff when Mewelde Moore handed off on a reverse to Antonio Brown who took the ball 89 yards for a touchdown.
It was the second time in as many seasons that the Titans have allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown.
LaRod Stephen-Howling of the Arizona Cardinals returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown on 11-29-09, also at L.P. Field.
Rookie kick returner Marc Mariani als lost a fumble on his first return of the day on the kickoff after the Steeler kick return touchdown.
TITANS FIRST ROAD GAME OF THE SEASON
The Titans will take to the road for the first time this season when the travel to New York next Sunday to face the Giants for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
This will be the Titans first visit to the new Giants Stadium, in it’s first season as the home to both the Giants and Jets.
The Titans faced the Jets last season in the old Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands.
STEELERS QUARTERBACK TROUBLES
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had more than their share of issues at quarterback this season.
First the much publicized issues and suspension of starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after an alleged sexual assault complaint agianst the quarterback in Georgia during the offseason cost him the first six game.
Then today’s starter Dennis Dixon suffered a left leg injury during the second quarter Sunday against the Titans and was replaced by Charlie Batch, who untill yesterday had been the 3rd string behind Byron Leftwich.
Leftwich was released Saturday night, just prior to the Titans game, leaving the Steelers with only Dixon and Batch on the active game roster.
Hines Ward, who played quarterback in college at the University of Georgia is the emergency quarterback and would have been brought in if neessary after Batch, however the Steelers media relations director stated that Dixon would have been able to return in an emergency.
