There were worse days for the New York Yankees than last night’s 10-3 loss….
2004 – After losing the first three games of the ALCS, the Red Sox win four consecutive games to win the American League pennant beating the Yankees in the Bronx, 10-3. Johnny Damon’s two home runs, including a grand slam in the fourth, and Derek Lowe’s solid pitching performance helps Boston to join the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders as the only teams in the history professional sports to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win a seven-game series.
There were better days on the horizon…..79 years ago
1931 – Mickey Mantle, the ‘Commerce Comet’ is born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma. The newborn’s dad names his son after Mickey Cochrane not realizing the major leaguer catcher’s real name is not Mickey but Gordon. The future Yankee outfielder is glad his father was not aware of this fact.
And some teams gave up more than ten runs in a playoff game…
1993 – Calling balls and strikes during Game 4 at Philadelphia’s Veteran Stadium, Charlie Williams becomes the first black umpire to work home plate during a World Series. The game becomes memorable as the Blue Jays win the 15-14 marathon which takes a record four hours and 14 minutes to complete.
And take some solace that at least your starting third baseman and one of your starting pitchers that dabbled in illegal PED’s haven’t been indicted….
Barry Bonds was part of the ceremony throwing out the first pitch at AT&T Park. Frankly, considering the weakness of the government case against Barry, the Giants did the right thing in honroing him and other members of the 2002 National League Championship team. As I wrote earlier this month, Bonds and former managing general partner Peter Magowan were the forces behind the privately funded construction of the ballpark that kept the Giants in town.
If the Giants do play the Rangers in the World Series, will sportswriters vent their spleens regarding the use of marijuana by Tim Lincecum, the cocaine use of Rangers manager Ron Washington and the addictions of Josh Hamilton, or will they let this issue pass because they like these people?
