It’s Friday again – what a great week and what a great weekend is ahead – time to find out what’s happening in the Los Feliz area this weekend and next week.
The Greek Theatre in Griffith Park is preparing to go dark for the winter, and only two shows remain on this year’s schedule. Tonight, October 22, you can catch Widespread Panic at 7:00 p.m. The season finale on Saturday, October 23 brings us Interpol with special guests, White Rabbits, beginning at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, go to Ticketmaster, or check out www.greektheatrela.com/events.
If you’re craving movies, you can catch the new Clint Eastwood directed film “Hereafter” starring Matt Damon at the Vista, playing at 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. At midnight, you can catch “Weird Science.” The Los Feliz 3 offers a double-feature with “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” screening at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and “Nowhere Boy” screening at 4:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. In the other two theaters are the new Bruce Willis flick “Red” and “The Social Network.” Showtimes for those films are 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.
If books are your thing, then this is a good time for you. Skylight Books is offering readings by several authors. Tonight you can catch Eileen Myles as she reads and signs her new book “Inferno” at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, former LA Law and Clash of the Titans star Harry Hamlin will discuss and sign his memoir “Full Frontal Nudity at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., catch David L. Ulin’s discussion and signing of “The Lost Art of Reading.” Finally, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Kim Dower will read and sign her poetry collection “Air Kissing on Mars.” Skylight Books is located at 1818 No. Vermont Avenue.
For those craving comedy, don’t forget about the “Keep it Clean Comedy” show, every Monday at 9:30 p.m. at the 1739 Public House.
Thespians have a lot to look forward to, with several unique offerings in our area. At the Steve Allen Theater, you can spend an intimate evening with Mary Lynn Rajskub as “Mary Lynn Spreads Her Legs” on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., or see one of the best neurotic funny ladies in the business when Lauren Weedman presents “No . . . You Shut Up” on Sunday at 8 p.m. Both productions will be ending next weekend, so don’t miss this chance to catch them before they’re gone.
Firesign Theatre returns to the Barnsdall Theatre October 21-23. The production is entitled “I Think We’re All Bozos on This Bus, and will be presented each night at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $40 to $60, and are available by going to the Theatre’s website at www.firesigntheatre.com. The Barnsdall Theatre is located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard. Barnsdall Arts Park is also home to the weekly Farmers Market every Wednesday from noon to 7 p.m. in the parking lot off Hollywood Boulevard.
Finally, if you want to venture outside our community, you have several wonderful choices. Tonight you can join me at the Alina and Friends showcase at Pi on Sunset, located at 8828 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. This event is all ages and FREE, and starts at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, you can combine your love of music and comedy by attending the Acme Saturday Night show at the Acme Comedy Club on La Brea. The evening kicks off at 7, and the musical guests are Danielle Bisutti and Rob Michaels. Check out their website for additional information (www.acmecomedy.com).
On Sunday, catch Amy Clarke’s final performance of 2010, as she celebrates her birthday at the Hotel Cafe’ on Cahuenga, between Hollywood and Sunset. Amy goes on at 7 p.m. and tickets are only $10 at the door.
On Wednesday, you can attend an exclusive showcase at Mikal Blue’s Revolver Studios in Thousand Oaks. The showcase begins at 7:30 p.m. and features more than 10 local indie artists, as well as label greats Angel Taylor, Keaton Simons and David Ryan Harris (John Mayer’s guitarist).
