German authors Ewa Jostes and Stephanie van der Linden have teamed up for a book sure to become an intercontinental knitting classic. The book is The Sock Knitter’s Workshop: Everything Knitters Need to Knit Socks Beautifully.
Ideal target market
This is a book for an experienced knitter who has made at least a few pairs of socks and wants to become an expert!
Learning/Teaching/Reference Value of Sock Knitter’s Workshop
The instructional value of this book is off the charts! One entire chapter is devoted to each of the following: casting on, cuffs, heels, and toes. Casting on can be tricky since socks need stretchy tops. “Heels” chapter describes getting a good fit for narrow, medium, and wide feet in addition to showing heel flaps, round heels, afterthought heels, and more. “Toes” chapter shows propeller toes and anatomically correct socks too.
Close-up photos are excellent. Stitches are clearly visible. This will be a reference book used time and again by a serious sock knitter.
Description of patterns
The patterns included in this book are mostly basic and practical. The emphasis of the entire book is well fitting and perfectly constructed socks rather than intricate or decorative designs. The bulk of the book is devoted to knitting technique, not patterns.
Instructions for patterns in Sock Knitter’s Workshop
Instructions assume a good deal of knowledge about knitting socks. In other words, the assumption is that a knitter has read and clearly understood the information in the first three quarters of the book! Pattern instructions are given for double-pointed needles. Circular needles can, of course, be used, but it is up to the knitter to interpret instructions. This is not a book for a beginning knitter!
This is a book that will be used for years by a knitter who enjoys socks. It is a good value and an excellent reference book, but not a book for a beginner. The book mostly shows knitting with double-pointed needles, and often four or five needles at that. The use of circular needles (gaining popularity here in Oklahoma City) is mentioned, but the authors do not devote much time to it. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic book.
