Sylvania netbook from CVS: More questions and answers about wireless and more

by echo flam

I had not intended to write any more articles about my new toy, the $99 Sylvania Netbook from CVS. However, when I glanced at my comments on the previous articles, I realized that there were many questions asked that had not been answered. So, I decided to answer those with another article. Well, another article wasn’t enough! There were so many questions, so here are some more.

I am not a computer expert, as I’ve told you before. I am on the computer quite a bit. I hope this helps you. I have enclosed a video review or the computer at the left of this article that you might find helpful.

That brings me to the first question: What does this have to do with social media?

Yes, someone did actually ask me that! I will refrain from commenting on their motives and answer the question. These little machines were developed specifically for Facebook, Youtube, and web-based email. It has some other uses, of course, but it was born to be social…social media, that is.

I’d like to know how well it handles web e-mail sites like hotmail, yahoo, etc.

I have utilized hotmail on mine with no problem. Most web email sites have a mobile site, too.

Could anyone go into the webpage at all? I have connection but no webpage is that me or normal for this thing?
and
We got one yesterday and can’t access the internet, its asking for a code. Sylvania says to take it up with CVS, they have nothing to do with the Netbook. But they made it…so….???
and
Did anyone figure out how to access IE? so frustrating!

These comments are common when the netbook from CVS is being discussed. I don’t know how I would be able to answer these questions without seeing how the device is configured. You have to have a wireless internet and have the netbook configured correctly. Be sure that the Wireless properties shows that the “key ” requirement is disabled. Your wireless internet at home or at the hotspot may require a password or code, and this will be entered at the browser stage where you punch in the password when it prompts you for it.

I am not a computer expert, nor do I play one online, but I would suspect that there is a simple problem with the settings. Here is a more detailed article about the WiFi settings.

Hi Barbara. Can you use Skype with this netbook? We have a loved one in the Army, located in Afghanistan and want to reach out to her. This would probably be the main reason for purchasing the Netbook so any input you can give with this would help. Thanks!

I don’t think so. It has a voice recorder, but no camera. It would be great for messaging as it has a Windows Messenger program. The instructions say that you can carry on a voice conversation, so that may be a possibility for you.
