Since we’re barely a week away from the release of Capcom’s Super Street Fighter 4 arcade version, I’m going to cover the girls of SSF4, starting with everybody’s favorite street fighting schoolgirl.
In 1996, Capcom fanboys were in a frenzy over “Ryu’s little sister”. The Street Fighter Alpha/Zero series introduced many new things to the Capcom universe, new style of artwork, new styles of gameplay, alpha counters, custom combos, and of course new characters. While most of the new characters were from previous games like the original Street Fighter, Street Fighter 2 and Final Fight, one of the original characters to stand out was Sakura Kasugano. Originally thought to be Ryu’s little sister in teaser art due to her wearing his traditional headband and gloves, as well as showcasing all of his Anatsuken/Shotokan special moves. You later find out in the storyline that she is simply a normal(sort of) Japanese schoolgirl who was fascinated by Ryu after a street fight and sought to have him become her sensei.
Since her introduction to the franchise, Sakura quickly became one of the most popular characters. She has been included in almost every SF related game since Alpha 2. The only SF characters with more appearances are Ryu and Chun-Li. Clearly, the fanboys love Sakura, and so do we.
