The evening was shaping up to be beautiful – and it would be a shame not to take advantage of it. A quick call to the pleasant Pro Shop staff at Spring Valley Golf Club in Elizabeth, Colorado and the tee time was just after 6:00 p.m.
Spring Valley Golf Club is about 20 minutes from Parker, CO. It’s a surprise to come over the hill and see the ribbon of fairways across the horizon. The recently renovated club house is now a beautiful stone-clad structure with two restaurants and the Pro Shop.
The tee boxes here are forward and generous toward women golfers. The fairways are wide and large, giving high handicap players a little more room. It’s easy to walk the front 9 of this course. If you’re interested in playing 18, a cart might be in your future – some of the tee boxes on the back 9 are more of a hike. For 18 holes, the course is a respectable 5156 from the red, 7180 from the black tees.
Spring Valley feels very welcoming. Deer forage in the wooded areas between the holes and hawks circle in the sky hunting for their meals. Even when the course is full, it never feels rushed or crowded. In the early evening, cows from the adjoining ranches bellow. Foxes and coyotes wander the fairways. You definitely feel like you’re in the country.
The first hole is a straight fairway down to a rolling green. This hole includes a water feature to the left that isn’t meant to be in play. The red tees are set up just past the large cottonwood tree. My husband shot off the white tees, I shot off the red and the beautiful evening had begun!
The 4th hole is a favorite. The white tees are set back behind the trees and the creek – 322 yards to the green. A good shot misses the large cottonwoods and rests to the left of the new trees planted along the right side of the fairway. The red tee box is in front of the creek, and a straight shot to the green – 233 yards. An easy par!
A creek winds through the course, and trees planted several years ago shade the fairway. These new trees relieve the pasture-like feel of the course, particularly on the front 9. The back nine winds around hills and through the woods, finishing with a long par 5 with a lake to the right on the final third of the fairway. Golfers enjoy wonderful views from elevated tee boxes.
Spring Valley Golf Club offers a year-round golf experience, memberships, and driving range. Rates are reasonable, particularly the twilight rate on the weekends. The Pro Shop staff is helpful and the shop has a good selection of clothing and accessories. The grill has a great patio for an after-round beverage or snack. A hidden jewel near Elizabeth!
