Michael Buble is a Canadian singer-songwriter and actor whose interest in jazz began around the age of 5; but it was when he was in his teens that his true singing talent emerged. His first singing engagements were in nightclubs at the age of 16 and then when he was 18, he entered a local talent contest and won. He spent the next 7 years performing in talent shows, conventions, on cruise ships, hotel lounges, bars, clubs and much more. He had several small television appearances throughout the late 1990’s and then he became a frequent guest on the Vicki Gabereau’s national talk show on the CTV network.
It was in 2000 that his career finally had a breakthrough courtesy of an aide to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, which led to an introduction to David Foster, the multi-Grammy Award winning producer and record executive. This introduction didn’t immediate led to career success, but it got Buble on the right path. He also appeared in small roles in the movies Duets and Totally Blonde.
In 2003, his self-titled debut album was released, featuring a range of standards from various eras including the singles “Fever,” The Way You look Tonight” and “For Once in My Life” (among others). The album hit the top 10 in Canada, the UK and South Africa and hit number 1 in Australia. While the album was only marginally successful in the States, it did reach the top 30 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary charts. That fall, he released a Christmas EP called “Let It Snow” that peaked on the Billboard 200 charts. The next year he won the “New Artist of the Year” award at the Juno Awards.
His second studio album called “It’s Time” came out in the spring of 2005; again, featuring standards from various eras but it also include an original track – his hit single “Home” – which was co-written by Buble, his musical director Alan Chang and David Foster’s daughter Amy Foster-Gilles. This album was an international hit, spending 104 weeks on the Billboard Top Jazz Album chart. In 2006, he won four Juno Awards and was nominated for two Grammy Awards.
The next year his third album “Call Me Irresponsible” was released and it rose to number one in its second week. This album featured his hit single “Everything”, which went on to become one of Buble’s biggest hits ever and the album went on to sell over 5 million copies worldwide.
Buble’s latest album called “Crazy Love” came out last year and featured the single “Haven’t Met You Yet,” which is today’s Song of the Day. The single was, again, co-written by Buble, Chang and Foster-Gilles, achieved number one status and won the 2010 Juno Award for Single of the Year.
Since his debut album came out, Buble has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.
