As Chicago continues it’s commitment to become the most eco-friendly city, local company Five Accessories is planning their appearance at Vert Couture: Sexy and Sustainable Eco-Conscious Fashion Show and Benefit. The event, which will take place October 24, 2010 at Mercedes Benz of Chicago, on North Avenue will feature many of Chicago’s hottest sustainable, fair trade, and eco-designers as they present spring/summer 2011.
Five Accessories was the brainchild of Chicago entrepreneurs Christine Hutchinson and her husband Wells. While honeymooning in Bali, the Hutchinson’s learned of the economic difficulties the country suffers from. They also learned the difference a small amount such as five dollars can make in the lives of their people.
Having admired the beautiful handbags and jewelry during that trip, The Hutchinson’s returned home and launched Five. The company features jewelry, handbags and accessories hand-made from sustainable materials specific to the global region in which they are created. “We want to enhance the modern woman’s look by offering products that are carefully selected for their fun designs, natural materials, quality craftsmanship through fair trade partnerships and affordable prices”. Product lines are made in five regions: India, Cambodia, Honduras, Bali and right here in Chicago. With the sale of every product, the company donates a portion of the proceeds to charities within the regions. In Bali for instance, five dollars for every sale supports underprivileged school children. In Honduras, handbags are created from empty potato chip bags. A portion of the proceeds is donated to families as they find ways to tackle the climate crisis that results from burning trash.
Recycled mosquito netting is used to fashion bags from Cambodia where five dollars from every sale is donated to transitionsglobal.org, in support of the prevention of sex-slavery and human trafficking. The newest income generating program, Off the Street, provides income for participating StreetWise vendors. This is done through the creation of handmade accessories using recycled urban “refuse,” such as ticket stubs, bottle caps and similar items collected from the streets of Chicago.Streetwise is a socially conscious company dedicated to bringing homeless and impoverished men and women out of poverty.
Five’s online shopping boutique carries products from all the regions. They will be represented in a pop up boutique at the Vert Couture event as well as having products in the Fashion Show.
