You hear the word crochet and think of blankets for babies and nice, granny ladies. Not anymore! Baltimore has a new designer on the scene that is turning heads. Introducing Sashe’ Crochet by Kelle’. This line is “Clothing for the DARiNG, UNiQUE, & CRE8TiVE fashionista”, in the words of Kelle’.
It all began when Kelle’ was just 14 years young. She attended a Big & Beautiful pageant here in Baltimore with her godmother, gospel radio personality Doresa Harvey, who was serving as a judge. Every garment that caught her eye was constructed from an unrecognizable fabric that the winning designer used. This mesmerizing collection was the crocheted work of Ms. Felicia Dietrich of Felicia Dietrich Designs. Young Kelle’ just had to learn, and she did. In a non-traditional style her cousin taught her a basic chain stitch. From this informal lesson she began making skirts and before long she had a collection of custom pieces ranging from skirts to shorts, to even a crocheted bridal gown.
So you’re wondering where the name Sashe’ Crochet came from. It actually continued from a memorable day on the campus of Delaware State, during her undergrad years. Kelle’ and a few friends were lounging, as she prepared to debut her collection in a campus wide fashion show. They were listening to “Sashay Shante” by RuPaul and she instantly knew, after a few repeats of the line “Sashay Shante”, that Sashe’ Crochet by Kelle’ flowed perfectly. A little secret is, if you can say Sashe’ Crochet you just might pronounce Kelle’! You guessed right, it rhymes!
Sashe’ Crochet can be found at the Patapsco Flea Market booth #10 beginning this weekend and for the duration of the winter season. Online discounts are being offered via the Facebook and Sense of Fashion pages. These discounts will also be honored, when mentioned, at the flea market. If you don’t remember the website, try singing a little RuPaul.
Internships will be available to students interested in working with Sashe’ Crochet at the flea market. Priority has been given to students enrolled in Morgan State University’s Fashion Merchandising program, as well as students enrolled in marketing, fashion, and other related disciplines at colleges in the area.
Kelle’ encourages aspiring designers to be inspired, by Sache’ Crochet’s vision of course, and let their creative juices flow.
