The game of the week in the Des Moines metro area Friday night was supposed to be No. 1 Dowling Catholic against No. 4 Fort Dodge.
The Dodgers were unbeaten and eager to show the rest of the metro what they were made of. The Maroons had other ideas though.
Dowling Catholic continues to show the state that it will be the state champion in Class 4A this year as the Maroons used 28 second-quarter points to blow out the Dodgers in West Des Moines, 42-3.
Connor Bravard threw for 138 yards and two scores and rushed for another touchdown as the Maroons improved to 5-0 on the season. Ty Flood also had two rushing touchdowns for Dowling Catholic.
Jontel Clayton had just 53 rushing yards for the Dodgers, who are now 3-1. It was the first time this season that Clayton did not eclipse the 100-yard mark.
Indianola 21, No. 6 Ankeny 10
The Indians spoiled state-ranked Ankeny’s homecoming with a strong first half.
Indianola scored all 21 of its points in the first two quarters and held off the Hawks 21-10 in Ankeny. Kale Render had 147 passing yards and a score and also rushed for a touchdown in the win.
Joel Lanning led Ankeny with 109 rushing yards and one touchdown. Ankeny entered the game undefeated. Indianola was coming off back-to-back blowout losses.
Johnston 31, Urbandale 14
Michael Kinning threw two second-quarter touchdown passes to Cameron Biondi, while Nathan DePenning rushed for two fourth-quarter scores in the win.
DePenning finished with 137 rush yards as Johnston improved to 3-1. Urbandale is now 2-2.
Ames 35, Mason City 23
Mason City led 17-7 at halftime, but Ames scored 21 points in the third to complete the rally at home.
Kyle Anderson threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns and also added a rushing touchdown in the win. Darium Blum was his favorite target. Blum caught seven passes for 81 yards and a toudhdown.
Brandon Platts threw for 278 yards and three scores for the Mohawks, while Lincoln Verba had 100 yards receiving in the loss.
Sioux City East 35, Marshalltown 14
Sioux City East outscored the Bobcats 25-0 in the second half.
Alex Imming had 199 yards rushing and one touchdown. The talented quarterback also threw for 214 yards and two scores in the win.
Dominic Thompson-Williams had three catches for 108 yards and two scores for the winners.
West Des Moines Valley 69, Sioux City West 0
The TIgers rushed for 440 yards in collecting their fourth straight win. Three different players rushed for more than 100 yards as well.
Martin Looney had 160 yards and three scores, Brandon Ellingson had 107 yards and three touchdowns and Jordan Wang ran for 106 yards and one TD. Lewis also had 79 rush yards and three scores.
Sioux City West gained no first downs in the first half in the loss.
Valley’s lone loss this year came in the opener against top-ranked Dowling Catholic.
