I don’t know if you’ve heard about the controversy over the SCOTTEVEST products on the news over the last couple of weeks.
It has been kind of hard to miss as it has been discussed in publications such as USA Today, the New York Times, and Time magazine as a great way to finally have a garment which as enough pockets for all our toys.
It seems that Delta Airlines didn’t want to run the advertisement from SCOTTEVEST showing how their products can help travelers avoid baggage fees. Delta, like many other carriers, charges a fee for checked baggage now. The advertisement and statement from CEO Scott Jordan (who actually answers his own emails!) started the chain of events which has made the news full of discussion about baggage fees and the ability of the SCOTTEVEST products to help avoid them.
I’ve been a proud owner of a SeV vest for several months because I’m like everyone else these days.
I carry a iPod, Cell-Phone, Kindle (especially on road-trips), sunglasses, business cards, and when I’m on a road trip I add in camera accessories such as lens, filters, extra memory cards, and extra batteries. Of course, many of these devices require cables or headphones to work right.
Most of my clothes don’t have enough pockets, or deep enough pockets to even start to carry this load. That is why when I read about the SeV I decided that it would be worth trying for myself.
I loved the fact that the vest even comes in “bigger than average” sizes for guys like me and even a variety of colors.
What is the first thing makes the SeV and other SCOTTEVEST products so special? They have pockets everywhere. (See the photo here)
The pocket for my iPod touch for example is see-through on the inside of the vest. I can control the iPod without having to take it out of the pocket very easily. Above it is an ID pocket for my business cards. On the other-side another see-through pocket for my cell-phone. Are you starting to get the idea?
Well.. I was impressed when I loaded up the vest a couple of weekends ago for my trip to the New Holland Community fair. I was able to put my 80-300mm Canon Zoom lens in one of the front pockets without it sticking out. I had plenty of pockets to put lens caps, lens cloths, batteries, etc.. into. I won’t kid you, the vest weighed a ton with all the toys loaded in it.
The second thing I was impressed with was the suspension built into the vest. With it zipped up just partially.. the weight was evenly distributed so that I didn’t feel “lopsided” when loaded down with the lens etc… Except for the big lens in the front, the vest does not bulge from what is being carried from the inside. So you don’t “look like a photographer” or a mugging target depending on where you are.
Another feature which I’m just now starting to explore is the innovative wiring system called the PAN (Personal Area Network). What this does is manage those pesky headphone wires by holding them within the garment. When I’m using the iPod my wire is easily accessible and the headphones are kept secure by velcro tabs near my ears. It is also quick release so I can get the headphones out when I need them away from the vest. (I’m thinking about just keeping a pair attached all the time to tell you the truth.)
This is a product which I can wholeheartedly recommend to any road-trip warrior, frequent flier, or photographer. SCOTTEVEST has a variety of styles ranging from the vest (like my purchase) to full jackets which you would never guess are actually full of pockets (I’d love to get an Outback Jacket). They have mens and womens sizes available in several colors.
The SCOTTEVEST jackets are not cheap. You can’t expect to pay a bargain price for something that has quality construction and this many features. However, I’ve found the vest to be worth my investment. (If you sign up for the newsletter, they are ALWAYS running sales, by the way… I did buy mine on sale!)
Disclaimer: I purchased my SCOTTEVEST Travel Vest on my own before the current events hit the news on my own accord. I love the product enough that I’d love to be a paid spokesman someday, because this product is really that good.
