Gothic Belly Dance Revelations DVD. WorldDance New York. 2007
Running time 105
This DVD brings us 24 different performances in this unique belly dance style. With performers from across the US, we are treated as each performance tells its own story in its own way. Each one of these acts is different and unique in its own way. Some of my favorite performances are highlighted below.
Watching these performances will definitely give you new ideas on things to try in performances of your own. I also found that this DVD really showcases many different belly dance styles – and several of these, I didn’t really find all that gothic or dark at all.
Clan of Xymax
This performance is shot like a music video – Jeniviva goes to a club where she turns into a vampire. This one really does not have much actual dancing to it, as the real dancing doesn’t begin until the vampire transformation is complete.
2) Laura Rose
“My Dear Ghoul”
album “Body Census”
Laura is an undead Egyptian mummy that really knows how to move to the music. This one is definitely creative, and I found the dance, costume and music to be a real good match. Different and unique, she tells the story quite well.
3) Sarah Skinner and Belly Essence
album: “Goddessdabce Sampler”
“Angels Among Us”
album: “Resurrection of the Divine”
If I get this one right, Sarah Skinner is a High Priestess worshipping a Goddess with the rest of her ladies. She is arrested, executed, and then either reincarnated/resurrected/transformed into a Goddess herself. I particularly liked this idea, but felt a little unsure at what exactly her position was at the end – how exactly her transformation took place as in was she reincarnated, resurrected or something else.
Middle Eastern flavored music with a slightly darker flair – Blanca’s costume is incredible and her style is direct and punctuated. She demands attention with this dance and surely gets it.
“Juno Wakes” by Maduro
“March of the Dead”
album: “Bone Peeler”
The dance group Shakra performs with their own special industrial style bellydance, and yet they are able to show two complete different styles with their 2 music choices in this selection.
6) Ayshe, Blanca, Sara Murphy
“Initiate Amongst the Foresaken”
music: “Lotus Bloom”
album: “Resurrection of the Divine Feminine” by Jehan
A type of veiled dance as we see the forsaken, grow, bloom and blossom.
“Keys Unlock Things”
Really like her interpretation of the music and the choreography to the music in this one.
“Mille Anni Passi Sunt”
album: “Mille Anni Passi Sunt”
by Corvus Corax
A dance with Isis wings. I found this one to be one of the most visually appealing.
9) Sera and Solstice
Sera, Laura Parker, Melissa Randazzo
album: “Balance” by Freek Factory
I really liked the music in this one, and how most of the time they really seemed to dance with the music, but other times they seemed to ignore the same accents in the music they had just been dancing with and they did not seem quite as in sync to me as many of the other group dancers are. This one just left me feeling a little unfulfilled.
music: “Cold Room”
Album: “Strange Flesh”
I admit – dancing with fire always impresses me. Not to mention, her outfit was killer.
album: “Fun with Knives”
by Velvet Acid Christ
Blue winged – outfit kind of reminded me of an Amy Brown fairy. I appreciate how Sashi uses turns often in her routine, giving the audience views from all sides. She is able to entice the audience with this method.
“Dance of Mind”
While this is just so completely different, I have to admit, I didn’t like it.
“You Leave Me Cold”
album: “Diabolical Streak”
Tempest is divine in this burlesque type dance.
by Shiva in Exile
Dancing with a dark cloak over vibrant costuming – we can only see what the dancer allows us to see. When all is revealed the dancer is wrapped in a very large live snake. Since I’m in the same group as Indiana Jones when it comes to snakes, I had to pass on this one.
15) Elsa Leandros
“Ciftetelli” and “Al Ayn Mulayateen”
Starts off with Elsa leaving her home and runs into a couple of guys on the street playing with some flails. This gives her an idea and next we see her in gothic rendition of Viking garb dancing with flails in each hand.
Gothlima: a 9/8 fusion
music: “Rumeli Karsilamasi” by Djinn
album: “The Middle East Side”
Red, black and fun!
“Ultra Violent Ultra Skilled”
Zentriert ins Antlitz
Very different from her earlier performance on this DVD, very flashy, very energetic
album: “Shimmer Sustain”
Sultry sword dance.
19) Sherene Vismaya
High energy veil dance that also includes some floor work.
20) Ayshie and Adrienne
Amazon and Sorceress
“Resurrection of the Divine Feminine” and “Journey”
album “Desert Winds”
This one gives us a story of a sorceress with Isis wings and an Amazon woman she appears to have captured, or perhaps created – it’s noticeable that this performance has been edited, so it’s hard to know what we missed. The two battle in dance until one is victorious.
“God of Hell”
by The Retrosic
Again Sashi, really delves into the music and interprets it well.
“The Hidden Cage”
by Die Form
One of my favorite dancers, Ariellah shows us through her dance just where the walls of her cage are.
“Wings of Steel”
album “Chasing the Ghost”
Tempest brings us a second dance on this DVD – this one more gothic than the other which was far more burlesque. She always interprets the music so well and tells the story of the music through her dance.
“Blood Oil Gold” by Solace
album “Strange Flesh”
In more traditional middle eastern attire and song, Isis gives my most favorite performance on this DVD.
