The youth group at Destiny Christian Center, Refuge Youth Ministries (RYM), has opened its doors once again for the new school year.
Although the format is the same, Refuge has gone through a few changes over the summer and will be reflecting those changes during the new year.
The youth room has undergone slight transformations with the introduction of a newer, much nicer, level-to-the-ground pool table and there are now three different video game stations available for youth to play Rock Band, Mario Cart, or Halo 3 at their choosing.
Of course, RYM still offers the other activities too, including ping pong, air hockey, foosball, and various board games.
The snack shack has been reopened as well with new foods available this year – including more sweet snacks than ever and the introduction of hot drinks such as apple cider and hot chocolate. All the old favorites, including pizza, soda, and chips are still available.
As the youth group grows, so does the necessity for adult leaders. The adult leaders at RYM are not there to keep an eye on the kids, but rather to befriend them, hang out with them, and develop deep, meaningful relationships with the youth that will touch their lives.
Refuge will still be meeting every Friday evening as before, but this year (during the winter months at least, when the days become shorter) youth group will be cut back by ½ hour, so that RYM will last from 7 to 9 instead of continuing until 9:30.
Youth will still have the opportunity to hang out with each other, participate in worship, play group games, and hear the pastor’s message in the time allotted. This year’s messages will include a series on Close Encounters of the Jesus Kind (chronicling Biblical examples of lives that were forever changed after having met Jesus) and Relationships God’s Way, to name only a couple.
The youth pastor at Refuge, Pastor Tom Tweedle, is looking forward to this year. He is excited about the growth that has already occurred in so many of the lives of his youth, and he is anticipating much more to come.
He’s approaching the year with care, however, as Refuge is beginning to grow at an exciting rate, and he wants to be sure that all youth, especially new visitors, receive the attention that they deserve.
