The Albany State Golden Rams followed up their dominating performance against the Kentucky State Thorobreds with an impressive win over the Clark Atlanta by a final of 28-13.
Running back Robert Welton ran all over the Panthers on his way 120 yard rushing and two touchdowns on the day.
Quarterback Stan Jennings had a solid day passing for the Rams, completing 50 percent of his throws (9-18) for 159 yards and a touchdown. He also had a key touchdown run that put the Rams
back in the game in the second half.
Ronnie Childs was the Rams leading receiver in the game with four catches for 54 yard.
Running back LiRonnie Davis had the only receiving touchdown for the Rams—a 19 yard catch-and-run that put the ASU on the scoreboard first.
Isaac Warren led the Rams “Blue Crush” defense with 8 total tackles.
Safety Mario Fuller came away with five tackles and a pivotal interception late in the contest.
The first half of the game was a tight contest with the Rams scoring first on Davis’ reception and the Panthers answering with an interception return for a touchdown by Darel Strong that could have tied the game but Clark was unsuccessful on the PAT so they still trailed 7-6.
The score remained that way for the remainder of the first half.
In the second half, the game –and the weather— turned ugly for the Rams.
Rain started to fall light early in the third but midway through the quarter it was a full blown storm.
As a result, Davis lost handle of
the football and it was recovered by Clark Atlanta’s Dominic Hughes who returned 42 yards for a touchdown.
After getting the PAT the Panthers had their first lead of the game 14-7.
Jennings would respond with a 17 yard scramble to the end zone that put the Rams up again 14-13 with 1:36 left in the third.
On the Panthers, ensuing drive quarterback Ronald Thomas’s pass was intercepted by Fuller who returned it 14 yards to the Clark 26 yard line.
On the Rams next offensive play, Welton took a hand-off the remainder of the way to the touchdown to give his team a 21-13 and some breathing room.
Late in the fourth quarter Welton had another 26 yard touchdown run to put the game away for good.
The Rams will travel to Tuskegee Al. to take on the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on Sep. 18.
