Home and Living has full faculty and good senses, including sense of smell. That’s why when our next guest, Suzy Batiz, Founder and CEO of Poo-Pourri, came on board with a sample, we had to try it out. (Besides, we love product innovators with a bent for good humor.)
Q.: Welcome to Home and Living. Can you tell us a little about your business background?
S.: I am a self-described self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur. I majored in marketing and management in college and have started many businesses throughout the years ranging from bridal salons to interior design. My love for aesthetics was essential in creating the Poo~Pourri brand which is known as much for the look of the brand as the effectiveness of the product.
Q.: There are a lot of bathroom spray deodorizers on the market, but yours is different: how?
S.: Poo~Pourri is made with essential oils, its non-toxic and its used before you go. Most air fresheners on the market now are used after the fact. Poo~Pourri is pre-emptive, it is not meant to mask a smell but to eliminate it before it ever occurs.
Q.: How did this product come to be?
S.: I’ve always enjoyed aromatherapy as a hobby, so when my brother in-law approached me with a revolutionary bathroom spray concept—I took the challenge seriously. I worked in my kitchen for over 6 months developing the proprietary formula and tested it extensively. It is effective because of the extensive research done to select the right oils to control mal-odor.
Q.: Talk to us about the scent(s) of Poo-Pourri.
S.: Poo~Pourri is a fresh, clean scent made up of a blend of essential oils such as bergamot, lemongrass and grapefruit. Most people say it smells “clean and fresh”. That’s just the Original scent…we have multiple others ranging from sweet Peach and Berries of our No. 2 to Eucalyptus and Spearmint for our Royal Flush.

Q.: Do you have an environmental mission?
S.: Poo~Pourri is safer than most air fresheners on the market also you use less when using it preemptively.
Q.: And is it safe on fixtures?
S.: Poo~Pourri contains only natural odor eliminators and essential oils commonly found in other bath products and should have no more effect to any part of your waste water system (ie toilet, pipes and septic system) than using a natural shampoo or conditioner in your shower.
Q.: I thought it was interesting to have a travel size for your purse. Are there other products now?
S.: The Poo~Pourri line has over 64 products including products for your baby, pet and even your car. In January of 2011, Poo~Pourri will migrate from the bathroom to the kitchen with an entire line of natural, products that are named as clever as the originals.
Q.: What has been the customer response to your product? Have you heard about other stories?
S.: Overwhelmingly positive. The company has grown from my personal kitchen to over 5,000 gift boutiques nationwide in 3 years. The growth was because of the most amazing marketing tool we have, word of mouth.
We have heard every bathroom story you will ever want to hear and a lot that you would never want to. Customers are so thrilled with the effectiveness they can’t wait to share with us. Just recently we heard from a customer that she was in a Five Star restaurant in Arizona with a group of women and Poo~Pourri was the main dinner conversation topic. We have heard how effective it is from hospital rooms to tour buses with broken toilets. Today we received this from Richard O.— “The developer of this product should receive the Nobel prize”
Q.: Where are Readers going to find the products and do you have a website for more information?
Q.: Is there anything else you would like to tell Home and Living Readers?
S.: Poo~Pourri is about not taking anything too serious, especially bathroom odor. Life is sweet so your bathroom should be also. And most don’t know this fact: The essential oils in Poo~Pourri have an invigorating effect-yep citrus oils such as bergamot and grapefruit are uplifting. No wonder everyone is happy about going to the bathroom now.
