Rumors are all over the British press that HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry next year. Frankly, there is so much chatter right now it is hard to tell what is supported and what is one newspaper reporting on another! What appears to be known is that background preparations are continuing and the Daily Mail quotes a “royal insider” who says that “William has decided the time is right.” The dates being looked at are July or August, but the final decision has not been made. 2011 makes sense on the royal calendar for reasons we have mentioned before, not the least of which is Prince Philip’s 90thbirthday. 2012 just seems too hectic as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is that year as are a number of engagements that will take William out of the country, not to mention the London Olympics.
Other, less substantiated, speculations are put forward in this round of rumors. One of the more interesting rumors is around titles that the Queen may bestow on the couple the day of their marriage. The bestowing of titles on the day most likely will happen, as it had before for Princes Edward and Andrew (Earl of Wessex and Duke of York respectively). The Daily Mail speculates more specifically that the titles will be the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, although there is no evidence to back that up. In addition, there are claims that the location is being narrowed down. Westminster Abbey is the most likely location as it can hold 2,000 people. Another possibility is St. Paul’s Cathedral, but rumor has it William doesn’t want to marry there, as that is where his parents did. He seems to lean towards St. George’s Chapel, but with seating only for 800, that seems unlikely. As much as Prince William may want a small ceremony, he is the future King of England so heads of state from all over the world will be attending. It is going to be bigger than 800. Another new rumored piece of information is that the wedding day will be a national holiday in Britain. Again no other supporting information to back that up.
The source tells the Daily Mail that:
“William realized that he couldn’t keep stringing Kate along forever. And although he would have loved to remain single until his mid-thirties, the fact is he knows that Kate is the right girl for him.”
Not surprisingly there is no statement by Clarence House to confirm any of this:
“Only Prince William and Kate Middleton know what their plans are and anything else is just speculation.”
From this royal watcher’s point of view, the specifics probably don’t mean anything, but the increased chatter may. The more people in the Palace that know, the more the rumors will leak out. Once you start seeing sources from the Royal Mint and Westminster Abbey also being quoted, it starts to seem more possible that something may really be in the works. Even with this round of rumors comes the news that an announcement isn’t expected until next year.
