The arctodus simus or giant short-faced bear is a formerly extinct species of prehistoric mammal. It is one of the largest bears on record, weighing nearly 2,000 lbs and standing on its hind legs at up to 13 ft. tall.
The arctodus simus is a carnivore requiring 35 lbs of flesh a day to power its massive bulk. This makes the arctodus simus a very aggressive, dangerous predator — so dangerous in fact that it nearly wiped out all of humanity and may well have driven humankind to develop the spear.
The short-faced bear is neither a fast runner or very dexterous. Its stamina is unequaled, however. It is capable of charging up to 40 miles per hour, but relies mostly on pacing, in much the same way elephants travel. Arctodus simus rarely hunts for its food, preferring instead to steal the carcasses of other predators.
The short-faced bear is most dangerous when food becomes rare – either due to climate change or just the feast-and-famine cycle that is a part of nature. It is the apex predator on Planet Oxygen, the planet so named because of its oxygen rich atmosphere. The two exploratory crews that were sent to the planet likely encountered bears during a change in the food chain, perhaps precipitated by the onset of a season where the bears gorge themselves before hibernating.

Though some creatures, such as golems and undead other than vampires, are not affected by the loss of their heads, most creatures die when their heads are cut off.
