French New Wave director, Jean-Luc Godard’s best remembered classic “Breathless” shows in a restored anniversary print at the 2010 Milwaukee Film Fest. Godard’s film still feels modern by today’s standards despite being half a century old. Frequent Godard star Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seaberg star in this romantic crime drama with a little bit of romance, a little bit of intrigue set against the background of early 60’s Paris. The film is playful at times but the film is also edgy and controversial, especially for it’s time. Godard was not only hip, cool, and trendsetting but also something else: relevant. Relevant not only to the times but to the world of film in general. Belmondo is a thief, petty criminal, ne’er do well, who hides away in the company of girlfriend, Seberg. This new print should bring a whole new generation to the works of Godard.
“Breathless” is a major coup for the Milwaukee Film Fest and a jewel in it’s crown for this years fine crop of films which includes the other notable classic, “Metropolis”. Godard’s work has influenced a bevy of contemporary filmmakers. Godard’s film “Band of Outsiders” in French is “A Bande Apart” which Tarantino appropriated for his own use production company A Band Apart Productions which he used for his earlier films. Despite his influences, no one has been able to duplicate what Godard has done with his best work and “Breathless” is among the filmmaker’s best. “Breathless” is a must see for any serious film fan, especially in what’s purported to be a stunning new print which is the same Criterion is alleged to have used for it’s recent release on Blu-ray.
