This is just a brief bit of gossip revolving around the upcoming Hangover 2, which has just started shooting for release sometime next year (let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later), and it’s still unconfirmed, so don’t go constructing effigies of you friendly, neighborhood Comedy Examiner and setting them on a bonfire if it turns out to be false. Agreed? OK, here goes: Mel Gibson is said to be appearing in The Hangover 2. Read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers…
The first Hangover featured a damn-near-supporting role for Mike Tyson, one that was completely unexpected (until it was spoiled in the trailers) and showed that “Iron” Mike could do comedy if given the right team to work with. There’ve been persistent rumors that The Hangover 2— currently filming for release next year with Todd Phillips back in the director’s seat– would feature another “celebrity cameo” in the vein of Tyson’s role, but until now we haven’t known who the secret guest star would be.
Page Six thinks they know. Take it away, guys:
Mel Gibson is taking a stab at saving his movie career with a comedy role as a tattoo artist in “The Hangover 2.” The troubled star, who…face(s) allegations that he assaulted and made threats against his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, has signed to play a Bangkok tattooist in the highly anticipated comedy.
Right now, nothing’s confirmed (beyond Page Six’s claim that he’s “signed on”), but it doesn’t sound outside the realm of possibility. You’ll recall that, earlier this year, Gibson got himself into a whole bunch of trouble by leaving a series of violently angry, racist, misogynistic voice mails on his ex’s answering machine. Since then, Gibson has seen the few fans that he had left questioning whether or not he’d ever be able to get back into our good graces. A role in The Hangover 2— a sequel to what is now the highest-grossing comedy of all time– would seem like a good PR move, but will people accept Gibson in a comedy? Or any movie, for that matter?
We’ll have to see if it’s true– and, if it is, what people think– when the film arrives next year. Original stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and (kinda surprisingly) Justin Bartha are all set to return to the film, but all of the other co-stars from the original– Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, Tyson– aren’t going to be returning. The film, as we previously reported, is set in Thailand.
