Fox looks like it’s struck gold again with a new series called ‘Lone Star’ filling up the ’24’ time slot Monday’s following ‘House’. This time slot is so strong that if the show only pulled in ‘House’ viewers it would have decent numbers, but ‘Lone Star’ is just the sort of drama that Fox has been missing.
Bob Allen (James Wolk) has been raised by John Allen (David Keith) to be a thief and a con man, he’s never known any other life, but he starts to realize in this first episode that he wants something real, that he’s in love. Bob’s girlfriend Lindsay (Eloise Mumford) is a sweet small town girl from Midland Texas who adores and trusts Bob completely, Cat Thatcher (Adrianne Palicki) his wife, was born with a silver spoon in her mouth as the daughter of Houston oil tycoon Clint Thatcher (Jon Voight – final season 24). Clint Thatcher is a tough business man who “punched out a redneck for stealin’ some pipe” Drew Thatcher (Bryce Johnson) reminds his older brother Trammel (Mark Deklin) when he thinks that maybe their Dad is going soft when he hires Bob to be a real part of their oil company.
“I did not spend my life hunting an elephant to get a job” John Allen tells his son when Bob about midway through the pilot episode realizes “Dad I don’t want to live like this anymore, I want something real.” His father sees how important this is to his son and reluctantly agree’s, “Ok, lets try it your way.”
James Wolk has a whole George Clooney thing going on that’s sure to charm the ladies in the audience and has some very nice moments throughout. There’s a scene about half way through where a young gas station attendants father comes in and reminds Bob of his father and how he forced him into this life of cheating and stealing and he breaks down. Before that point the audience might not be very sympathetic to his character, but that was the point that our preview group started to believe that he really does want to go straight. This young cast anchored by the two father Hollywood icons really seems to work.
Adrianne Palicki has a very nice scene when she see’s her husband having a bit of a breakdown after a confrontation with her brother and father at a cocktail party. She reassures him that he can do anything he believes he can do. She’s convincing not only to Bob Allen” but to the audience as well.
Jon Voight is a fabulous actor and indeed legendary, but he’s even more memorable when he’s a bad guy, tough character. He pulls you in immediately and he is the one that will discover his new son-in-laws secret life if anyone will. David Keith was very convincing as the “bad dad” in this show and viewers will hate him immediately, which in this case is a good thing.
Another ’24’ star sighting happens in the pilot episode as well, watch for a vignette with Nazneed Contractor (who played Kayla Hassan also from the final season of ’24’)
The first shows short introductions to the main characters with previews of the premiere episode.
The second shows vignettes of the first and second episodes
The third is an interview with the legendary Jon Voight about his character
The fourth is an interview with David Keith
