The leaves are turning; pumpkins are furiously being carved and the residents of Lincoln Park seek to find their alternative identities with image changing costumes. Restaurants in the Lincoln Park community are gearing up for what hopes to be a strong Halloween holiday weekend. With miles of spider webs hanging from the rafters, special events and parties planned, each Lincoln Park restaurant wants to take advantage of the opportunity to drive patrons through their open doors.
Recent industry reports by the Nations Restaurant News indicate that the number of transactions is up in the restaurant industry. But those same consumers are spending less when they walk in the doors. The per check average has dropped significantly. What does this mean? Consumers are not ordering beer, wine or liquor with their meals. These consumers are choosing to drink at home before going out. In a reverse scenario, these same consumers are eating at home and using their discretionary income to purchase drinks at the bar.
So what does this mean for Lincoln Park restaurants? The activity level is strong and the community supports their local establishments. But consumers are still gun shy regarding the economy. Consumers have not returned to their old spending habits. Surveys indicate consumers are budgeting for larger holiday purchases and to make room for these purchases will avoid extra entertainment spending.
