Jennifer Lee Nibbe, (née Gilman,) was arrested in Mankato today at about 2:30 p.m. The 33 year old woman of Lake Crystal was charged at 3:01p.m., in the Blue Earth County jail, with 2nd degree murder in the death of her husband, James Mervin Nibbe.
Police responded to a call from Mrs. Nibbe from her home at 51275 176th Street on August 31st at about 6 a.m. In the call, Mrs. Nibbe reported that there was an intruder in the home who had attempted to rob them. Police found James Nibbe, 26, dead at the scene. Mrs. Nibbe claimed that a man shot her husband, then attempted to sexually assault her in the living room. She showed police cuts on her inner thighs to prove this. Mrs. Nibbe was brought to Immanuel St. Joseph’s hospital for treatment of the wounds and was released later that day.
However, an investigator from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported that Jennifer Nibbe did not exhibit the type of defensive wounds that a victim would have had she been fighting off a sexual predator.
Jennifer Nibbe first told police that when the shooting occurred, she was preparing to take her dog for a walk. She then changed her story, saying that she was brushing her teeth. Finally, she said that she was in the shower when her husband was shot.
Jennifer and James were married about two years ago and James moved into the home that Jennifer shared with her teenage son, Brady Brown.
Police noted that even though it had been raining the day of the shooting, there were no footprints or tire tracks around the Nibbe’s house. Nor were there any signs of struggle on the living room floor where Jennifer claims that she was attacked.
Police searched the home for several hours, and took Jennifer’s journal as evidence in the case. In this journal, Nibbe admits to having a sexual infatuation with a male friend. During questioning, Jennifer admitted that she had been sending this friend nude photos via text messaging.
It was also found that Jennifer is in debt for thousands of dollars, and that she spends over $1,000 a month on illegally procured prescription pain pills.
If convicted, Nibbe faces a possible 40 years in prison.
