Fans of KPCC’s Steve Julian will have the opportunity to see him live onstage in George S. Kauffman and Moss Hart’s evergreen classic You Can’t Take It With You. Julian, host of NPR’s Morning Edition show, stars as Grandpa Martin Vanderhof head of an unconventional family which has been charming audiences since it first appeared on Broadway in 1936. Presented by Inland Valley Repertory Theatre the show opens 7:30 p.m. October 20 as a visiting production at the Candlelight Pavilion venue.
Terre Gunkel directs the 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy. The show features in addition to Julian, IVRT company members Walt Schaefer and Shaun Fesler, as well as Jill Gerber, Erika Jenko, Ryan Harton, Malinda Silva, Jonathan Page, Andi Rhoades, Oscar Gubelman, Arlene Lea, Michael Buczynski, George Waters, Valerie Jasso, David Billman and Sheri Jones.
The story revolves around goings on in the eccentric Sycamore home. Certain members of the household manufacture fireworks. There is a printing press set up in the parlor on which son-in-law Ed likes to print leaflets. His wife, Essie, is a graceless ballerina tutored by her long-suffering instructor Boris. Mother Penny can’t decide if she was to be a writer or a painter. Grandpa’s view of income tax is not popular with the tax collector. And that’s not the half of it.
Inland Valley Repertory Theatre company (IVRT as it has become known) is mounting this production for the second time. The first production ran in 1992, when the rep company was newly formed.
Since 1990, IVRT has succeeded in its goal of providing high quality theatrical productions in the community. During its initial ten year run, and now since its successful re-launch in 2007, IVRT has remained true to its vision by consistently producing critically acclaimed, award winning theatrical works which have garnered widespread kudos and honors such as the Rancho Cucamonga Community Foundation’s Primavera Award for outstanding contributions to the arts as well as several Inland Theatre League awards for acting and directing. IVRT formed an alliance in 2007 with the Candlelight Pavilion, and the successful “Wednesdays Just Got Dramatic” concept was born.
