Who was the overall star of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs)? Lady Gaga. She broke the record for the most nominations, and won eight awards (including Video of the Year for Bad Romance). That suggests that Gaga is the woman now enjoying the best month in the music industry. However, whose headlines just outdid the sensational VMA headlines?
Jennifer Lopez has reportedly inked a twelve-million-dollar deal, a one-year contract to replace Kara DioGuardi as a judge on American Idol (AI). FoxNews.com and TMZ project that she could begin her American Idol stint as early as next week to assess auditions. Hmm, Jennifer Lopez is giving Lady Gaga a run for her money.
Publicity’s easier for Jenny now, but Gaga seems to toil at publicity and sensationalism. Is she easily outdone in that respect? The public barely cares who sings better. By a monetary measure, Jenny beats Gaga by far. Jenny’s entrepreneurial skills, minority ownership of the Miami Dolphins, cosmetic line, fashion design, film career, tv… Jennifer’s a baaaad mutha — shut yo’ mouth! And that American Idol deal’s a pretty big catch, but…
Word is, Jennifer’s “DivAttitude” could ruin the idol gig. Yahoo and other media are reporting on allegedly “difficult-diva” behavior. That could understandably come from a bit of apprehension; let’s face it, Simon left a huge seat to fill. From a logistical standpoint, gorgeous Jennifer Lopez could fill that post with plump-n-juicy posterior to spare, but from the precarious point of public opinion, Jennifer could puncture her own popularity by being the show’s new cut-to-the-chase character. She has less to lose than Ellen DeGeneres, where that’s concerned; many people already love to hate Jenny. However, where Simon was concerned, the reverse was also true: The public hate to love him, but can’t resist. A cockney twang makes an on-screen skewering sound so cute! Jenny showed her supportive side, when she mentored contestants on American Idol, but she’ll also have to draw on her substantial acting skills to add some comedy to her rough-judge routine, if she’s cast in that role. Simon sometimes softened up, and his timing’s impeccable, but the gig also needs his undefinable elusive edge, as Ellen could probably tell you.
Now, if Lady Gaga were to join JLo on the American Idol panel, AI would need nothing else! Lady Gaga would be an instant hit! The Lady could be as tv-mean as all get-out with her sexy-styled delicate insanity (seeming perpetually drug-dazed), and she’d be the most dazzling hybrid of Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, sheer genius! Then, Jenny, part-owner of our (NFL) South-Floridian football team, might actually find herself outdone. Gaga would beat Jenny with a feather. However, with Gaga at the height of her hype, how much would FOX have to pay her to take the gig? Fifty mill? Here’s to money well spent!
