Talbots http://www.talbots.com (found locally at the Roseville Mall) has a new line of jackets that is clever, indeed. Playing on our love of old movies, classic fashion, and the star status of glamourous women of the past Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, and Katharine Hepburn, Talbots has created looks inspired by their iconic and uniquely identifiable styles.
Jackie Kennedy — known for bright, fresh color, boxy cropped jackets from her White House days in the 60s, to her glamourous tanned yachting look from her time as Mrs. Onassis in the 70s and 80s, Jackie was a petite lady, relatively short waisted and small-busted. Not a typical beauty, but still striking in her own right, Jackie developed a young fresh style that was uniquely American, particularly during her days with JFK. Talbots Jackie line is similarly simple and sleek, a tad boxie, but sporty and feminine.
Grace Kelly – known particularly for the classic looks she sported in Hitchcock movies such as Rear Window, Grace was blessed with classic all-American good looks – blonde, blue-eyed, athletic and statuesque. She is known for clothes in classic tones of gray, mixed with feminine details such as pearls, crewneck sweaters, pencil skirts and pumps which create a womanly sensuality underneath a seemingly cool and pristine exterior. Talbots Grace look is also classic, simple, cut with the statuesque woman in mind (think athletic medium build – neither very slim nor very plump).
Katharine Hepburn – known for her mix of masculine and feminine, her absolutely one-of-a-kind character – feisty, resilient, scrappy but always a lady. Think of her exchanging barbed comments with Spencer Tracy or Humphrey Bogart — she could take these guys on and beat them at their own game, at the same time winning their hearts. Her fashion style was as unique as her character – tailored jackets with a bit of maculine detailing such as shoulder pads, loose fitting high-waited trousers, button down shirts or, as she got older, turtleneck sweaters. Talbots Kate look is similarly styled for the slim woman who can take a narrow fit, and is lady-enough to take some masculinity mixed with her own femininity.
Prices are reasonable for well-fitted, tailored jackets in wools and tweeds. Go to your nearest Talbots and try these three lines to find your best fit – Jackie, Grace, or Kate.
