Have you seen the new Kindle commercials? Well, let’s start with the original commercial for the new Kindle – free 3G wireless ($189) and the WiFi ($139). It was very upbeat, had great background music; and just made you want to experience what those two people were doing on the beach as they were reading from their Kindles.
The new commercial reminds me of the “I’m a Mac” and “I’m a PC” commercials. Two people are sitting in direct sunlight. The man with the iPad seems to be struggling, because of the glare. The woman smugly informs him that she’s reading from a Kindle – cute.
However, in my opinion, the new commercial isn’t comparing computers as in the “I’m a Mac” and “I’m a PC” commercials. The Kindle is an electronic book reader. The iPad is a multipurpose device that functions pretty much like a computer, and can be used in place of one if you really need it to. (I had to this weekend. My Internet service went out; I had a Sunday deadline – but that’s another story.)
So, in my opinion, the commercial is cute, but really doesn’t hit the mark. Yes, we’ve all complained about the sunlight issue, but if that’s the only major issue we’ve complained about, well, that’s one issue!
So, if you’re looking for a good electronic reader that works in the sunlight (not indoors in the dark – it has no back light), the Kindle is for you. (The iPad has a back light and can be used indoors – in the dark – and outdoors in indirect sunlight.)
If you want your device to function as a computer, gaming device, get your e-mail, have access to your calendar and contacts, well the list goes on, and on, and on; then, the iPad, in my opinion, is a better choice. Yes, it’s more expensive, but when you look at what you are getting, you’re getting so much more than an electronic reader.

In my opinion we’re comparing “Apple”s” to oranges – you just can’t compare them.
