TWIN CITIES FILM FESTIVAL (TCFF) CLOSING EVENTS.
The inaugural event will wrap with a special screening of the film “Fair Game” and an appearance by its Executive Producer Bill Pohlad. The film relates the story of real-life CIA agent Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts) and her husband (Sean Penn). Her career was destroyed when her identity was revealed and her marriege strained when her husband is drawn into the investigation.
Photo ops/interviews begin at 6:30 p.m., screening at 7 p.m., Sat., Oct. 2, AMC Block E 15, 600 Hennepin Av., downtown Mpls., Tix at www.twincitiesfilmfest.com. Check the website for additional closing day events.
The Twin/Blue Jays game has a 12:10 p.m. first pitch meaning parking should ease a bit by 6:30. However, it’s advisable to get downtown early as there are events at First Av. and The Fine Line. If the Target Center ramp is full, check the ramps at 10th & Hennepin or 10th & LaSalle.
NEW ON DVD, TUES., OCT. 5:
“A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET” (REMAKE). SRP should be $20, retail around $15. Widely available so don’t overspend.
“ALLY McBEAL: SEASONS 3, 4 & 5”. SRP is $40 each, retail could go down to $30. Best Buy should be cheapest for week-of-release.
“THE KARATE KID” (REMAKE). Same as “Nightmare”. Widely available. Don’t overspend.
“JACKASS UNRATED 3-PACK”. Cheap at $20 SRP, should retail for $15. Not bad for three relatively funny movies.
“MARY TYLER MOORE: SEASON 7”. Finally, all 7 seasons are out there. It took longer for them to be released than the show was on the air. SRP is $30, retail probably $20.
“MONK: COMPLETE SERIES” (LIMITED ED.). This one books for $250, could sell as cheap as $192. 32 discs with a cool booklet. This won’t be around long unless it sells well and is re-released for Christmas.
“SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE COLLECTION” (CORMAN CULT CLASSICS). All three films on 2 discs should sell for $20. This package is from Shout! Factory meaning the quality of the picture and sound will be perfect. However, they cannot be held responsible for the content. These were all strictly formula storylines with some really mundane kills. Crystal Bernard from “Wings” is in Part 2 so there’s that.
“THE EXORCIST” (EXTENDED DIRECTOR’S CUT). One of the funniest, er, scariest films ever made. There’s an extra 10 minutes of head-spinning fun, um, horror. Really, truly zany, yeesh!, terrifying. Run screaming for the stores to spend another $15 for this one. (Sorry but demonic possession doesn’t do much for the jaded film watcher. Maybe if Crystal Bernard from “Wings” had been in it…).
As usual, Cheapo, the Fetus, Target and Walmart will be competitive for the more widely distributed items. Price shop the specialty items but Best Buy is the best place to start.
