Huron/Crestwood Friday 7 pm: Huron (5-3) is coming off of a workman like 24-14 win over Riverview while Crestwood (4-4) suffered a 2 OT defeat to Belleville last week. Huron won last year’s game in New Boston 39-14.
The Chiefs are looking to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in their school history and will once again rely on their diverse offense to put up points. The Chief defense has gotten better as the season has wore on and will most likely be needed against the athletic Chargers.
Crestwood’s four game winning streak was halted last week by Belleville but the Chargers have some capable offensive weapons in running back Lenard Edmontson and quarterback Nick Grucz.
This should be a close game. Obviously the Chiefs have a lot to play for and a winning season is still a possibility for the Chargers. Turnovers and special teams play will be important as usual. Pick: Huron 27 Crestwood 19
Airport/Livonia Franklin 7 pm Friday: Airport (5-3) is coming off of a high scoring win over Grosse Ile while Franklin (6-2) defeated South Lyon 34-28. These two teams have never played in football.
Airport has looked to diversify their one dimensional offense recently but will most likely rely on Jodeci Mays to move the ball against the larger school Franklin. Defensively the Jets will be challenged by the Patriots who are capable of scoring a lot of points.
Franklin is led offensively by Brent Marzion who has thrown for 1,079 yards and 12 touchdowns. His favorite target is 6’4″ Mike Sharp who has hauled in 32 catches and 7 TD’s this season. Running back Dan Muller leads the Patriot rushing attack which averages over 200 yards per game. The Patriot defense is led by LB Alex Forde.
This is the kind of game that can make a Huron League team better prepared for the playoffs if they can qualify. The Jets will have their work cut out for them but Franklin must find a way to stop Mays. Pick: Franklin 34 Airport 28
Milan/South Lyon East Friday 7 pm: Milan (6-2) is coming off of their worst loss in years but have still qualified for the playoffs. East (2-6) lost last week to Livonia Churchill 25-13.
The Big Reds need to play a solid game in preparation for the playoffs and will most likely use a balanced attack against the Cougars. Defensively, Milan was shredded last week and must get better play out of their young defensive line.
Offensively, East is led by Patrick Powers who is a capable QB and has thrown for over 200 yards multiple times this season. The defense is led by 210 lb senior LB Alec Sturos.
On paper Milan appears to have the better team. This is only the third year of varsity football for East but they do play in the central division of the Kensington Lakes Conference. Pick: East 27 Milan 21
SMCC/Brantford (ONT) Assumption College Friday 7 pm: The Falcons (8-1) are fresh off of a 63-21 victory over Milan while Assumption (4-0) defeated Johnson Collegiate last Saturday.
The Falcons will continue to run the ball 99% of the time but may look to throw the ball a bit in preparation for the playoffs.
Assumption College is kind of an unknown but do enter this week undefeated and will play in the semifinals next week in their league tournament as the #1 seed.
This will be an interesting matchup between two teams from different countries. Traditionally Canadian teams don’t fare well here in Michigan but the Lions haven’t lost this season. Pick: SMCC 35 Assumption 14
