NV Energy Honored for Commitment to Children’s Literacy
at Spread the Word Nevada 8th Annual Storybook Gala
Las Vegas-Henderson, Nevada (September 15, 2010) – The 8th Annual Storybook Gala “Unlock the World of Literacy” was held at The Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino on the 11th of September in the San Palo ballroom. The annual fundraiser supports children’s literacy programs operated by Spread the Word Nevada, a non-profit organization located in Henderson. NV Energy was honored for the company’s dedication and vital support of Spread the Word Nevada’s growth and mission.
As the honoree, NV Energy was presented with an original artwork created by Veronica Cortez, a former C.P. Squires Elementary School student, who received books from Spread the Word Nevada’s Kids to Kids program as a child. Veronica shared her story on how her life has been influenced by the Kids to Kids book distribution program, as guests became emotionally moved by her journey.
“Veronica is an inspiration, and we are honored to receive her artwork,” said Michael Yackira, President and CEO of NV Energy. “Spread the Word Nevada has made a remarkable commitment to the children in Southern Nevada, and our future as a community is dependent upon our children. NV Energy is proud to be associated with Kids to Kids.”
Imperial Crown sponsor, SuperPawn’s Caroline Ciocca, Community Relations Director, made a surprise announcement granting a $1,000 scholarship to guest speaker, Veronica Cortez, to support her educational endeavors. Veronica is currently a senior at Rancho High School with aspirations to pursue a career in Art.
Among the sponsors who helped bring the event to fruition are Lee’s Discount Liquor, Southern Wine and Spirits, and the National Charity League – Green Valley Chapter. Distinguished guests included Nevada State Senator, Barbara Cegavske; Nevada State Assemblyman, John Hambrick; CCSD Board of Trustees-District E, Terri Janison; and Nevada State Senator, Mike Schneider. Special guests were Heather Berkley, Jon and Judy Cobain, Steve and Sandy Hardie, Tim and Kathleen Harney, Robert and Irais Kolesar, Punam Mather, Gary and Judy Milby, Michael and Jenna Morton, Maureen Peckman, and Michael and Jennifer Yackira.
Entertainment highlights included a rendition of “America the Beautiful” by The Campbell Brothers from the Red Mountain Choir in Boulder City. The Mistresses of Ceremony were Sherry Swensk, Neighborhood Weather Reporter, and Denise Valdez, News Anchor, of KLAS-TV Channel 8.
Foothill High School YES-Young Empowered Skilled program students, Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association members, and Valley High School Color Guard volunteered their time to help at the gala.
