The Mystic Aquarium invites everyone to join then for a book signing with the author and illustrator of “Astro, The Steller Sea Lion” on Satuday Oct. 23rd.12-2pm. Author Jeanne Walker Harvey and Illustrator Shennen Bersani will be available to sign copies of their book, written for ages 4 to 9, about Astro, a Steller sea lion that lives here at Mystic Aquarium.
Astro came to Mystic, Connecticut from California in 2008. Originally orphaned at just a few days old, he was rehabilitated and released three times before being deemed non-releasable after being found participating in a walkathon with elementary school students. Astro was featured on the Today Show in March 2008 for his role in the walkathon, in which he completed three-quarters of a lap around the track. He was too accustomed to people to be out on his own, so he came to Mystic Aquarium to live with other Steller sea lions. He currently resides in the Pribilof Islands exhibit.
The book signing will take place inside the Aquarium Store.
The Aquarium will also host a special haunted family overnight at 7pm. Come see ghostly white whales slip through darkened water, dare to touch a shark and get up close and personal to an animal with more than six legs! After a nighttime tour, guests can play fun games like “Ring the Witch Hat” and “Tip the Tombstone”, and create a take-home craft.
Wear your favorite Halloween disguise, then transform into an aquarium animal with one of our special costumes. Sleep among the main floor exhibits and enjoy mummy sausages, spooky pancakes, hash brains and more for breakfast. Crafts and activities are geared for children ages 5 to 12. Children must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by a paid adult. Guests should bring a sleeping bag and flashlight. Pre-registration is required. Cost: Members: $55 adult, $45 child; Non-members: $65 adult, $55 child.
Those who aren’t able to stay overnight can still come to the Halloween Boo!reakfast on October 24th or 31st, where they can dine on mummy sausages, spooky pancakes, green eggs and ham, hash brains and more. Afterward, kids can help create a Halloween story; play games like “Ring the Witch Hat”; meet creepy, crawly animals; and top off the morning with a candy-filled goody bag. Costumes encouraged! You must pre-register for these events as well. Cost: Members: $16 adult, $13 child (ages 12 and under); Non-members: $18 adult, $15 child (ages 12 and under). Please note these are program fees only and do not include admission. Non-members will be required to pay regular admission rates in order to enter the Aquarium.
