Located in the small but entertaining town of Willow Glen, Taiwan Restaurant is a family owned Chinese eatery that serves up delicious Szechwan, Cantonese and Taiwan creations for an affordable price.
If you are looking for an Asian restaurant similar to PF Changs, Mr. Chau, or Panda Express, look the other way. Taiwan is not your average, greasy, hole-in-the-wall Chinese takeout. Some will argue that Taiwan serves “American-ized” Chinese food… but there is no doubt that they have a large following, and rightfully so. Taiwan Restaurant has been around since 1982 and has won the Best Chinese Restaurant of the Year award from the Metro for the last 4 years in a row.
Besides the delicious and lengthy menu, the restaurant itself is beautiful inside. Fresh floral arrangements spread throughout the dining room, shimmering red and gold furniture, and traditional Asian art (which the owner’s wife, Nancy Niu, paints herself). The service is also exceptional, friendlier than you would expect. Servers are prompt and eager to help.
Menu has huge selection, along with a creative Chef’s Special Menu with favorites such as the sweet Honey Walnut Shrimp, Crispy Eggplant with spicy garlic sauce, Sizzling Rice Soup, and the delicious Chinese Chicken Salad, with house made dressing that is so good it is sold by the bottle. The creative way the food is served is also appealing, with their Pineapple fried rice served in a large hollowed out pineapple, and egg rolls that come in a miniature shopping cart.
Lunch is definitely the best bang for your buck with 4 course lunches starting at $7.95. Entrée comes with soup salad, and rice. Dinnertime is usually busy, but the wait is not normally too long. You may also call ahead for a reservation, or make a to-go or delivery order with no additional charge. Taiwan also offers catering and event coordination services for office parties or family gatherings.
This is a great place to bring a group at the last minute. The tables are large, they seat tables quickly, and you can order a lot of things and share it family style, so everyone has a chance to try something different.
Taiwan is a gem of a restaurant that cannot be missed. Weide Z of San Jose said it best when he states “You can tell that whoever is running the details of this operation: from overseeing the menu, to outfitting the staff, to arranging the flowers and other decorations, loves what they are doing, really cares about the place, and even after 20+ years of operation is still thinking of ways to avoid the same old same old. Whether you enjoy their offerings or not, you can tell this restaurant is somebody’s labor of love.”
