You have to have a personal relationship with Jesus, so say the so-called born-again Christians. Jesus loves you, Jesus knows you, and Jesus wants a personal relationship with you. Really.
Really? How? How are you going to do that when there is no evidence at all of a Jesus, a living, breathing God or Jesus, a talking, walking Jesus and son of God? I have personal relationships with friends. We talk, visit, correspond, and communicate to cement these relationships.
I have personal relationships with friends who are distant, either a few hundred miles away or a few thousand miles away. I write them, call them, talk to them, email them, sometimes fax them, but am in contact with them as they are with me. Were I to do all the above with no returned response from them at all, I would not have a personal relationship with them, nor they with me.
I would be an annoyance at best, a stalker at worst. We know about stalkers. Often they stalk and annoy Hollywood or TV celebrities most of whom have no knowledge of their stalker or have ever knowingly laid eyes on them or communicated with them in any way.
There are also stalkers who do know or did know their victim, often ex-boyfriends or girlfriends from a relationship that has gone south. The extremes of this end tragically. The less extremes of this end with a restraining order or rarely, somebody coming to his/her senses.
To have a so-called “personal relationship with Jesus” smacks of delusion if not outright mental illness. I know of a lot of living people – the pope, the president, George Clooney, Andy Rooney of CBS, Brian Williams of NBC TV news, Queen Elizabeth, Billy Graham, Larry King, Courtney Cox, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Gates, Steven Hawking, etc. I have never contacted any of them (well, as a US citizen, I have written some ideas to various presidents over the years), and they would not know me if they fell over me. I do not have a personal relationship with them, nor they with me.
To have a “personal relationship with Jesus” is to delude yourself as to what or who Jesus is, other than perhaps an idea and a flawed figure from history, if that.
Hey, those of you with a “personal relationship with Jesus” – you’re stalking the guy! It’s a one-way street! Cut it out. You are making yourself look silly and confusing the rest of us. Fortunately, there is nothing – nobody – there to respond with a restraining order. Lucky you.
