This was my first trip to Expo East and it was like being a kid in a gluten-free candy store. Since there is such a focus on gluten-free products, we were literally tripping over the many vendors who had just launched a gluten-free product or had added one to their existing line.
Some of my greatest gluten-free finds are listed below in no particular order:
- Pamela’s Products is set to launch their Whenever Bars in three flavors: Oat Raisin Walnut Spice, Oat blueberry Lemon and Oat Cranberry Almond. These bars are made with certified gluten-free oats, 9 grams of whole grains, are low in sodium and cholesterol, a good source of fiber and are non-dairy. Each box will contain 5 individually wrapped agave and coconut sugar sweetened bars.
Bread and Wraps
- Maria and Ricardo’s – was demoing their 8″ tortilla, but will soon be launching a 10″ tortilla that will be the perfect size to make burritos.
- Udi’s Gluten Free Foods – was demoing their new Cinnamon Raisin Bread that will be launched in January. They made French toast using the bread and it was wonderful. No need to add cinnamon to the egg mixture, as they bread is loaded with cinnamon flavor and plump raisins.
- Mim’s Kitchen has just launched a line of shaped gluten-free cookie dough in five flavors. The product is kept in the freezer section. The cookies are GFCO certified, Kosher certified and are all natural. At Expo East, they demoed their sugar cookie as a Snickerdoodle (rolled in cinnamon sugar) to show the versatility of the product.
- Shabtai Gourmet just launched their version of a gluten-free, dairy, soy and corn free Bon Bon. All of their products are baked in a dedicated facility, are all natural, contain no trans fats or hydrogenated oils and are handmade and Kosher certified. Look for the Bon Bons and Florentine Lace Cookies at Return to Eden soon.
- Kinnikinnick Foods, Inc. – was demoing out their newly created gluten-free Pumpkin Spice doughnut. This doughnut was a seasonal item for them and this Examiner is hopeful they will add it to their regular offerings. The doughnut is lighter than their current doughnuts and is packed with flavor and drizzled with frosting. To me, the doughnuts taste like ‘fall’ and are the perfect size for a delicious snack. One wishes these doughnuts were iced and not just drizzled with frosting!
- Helen’s Kitchen – is set to launch a Fiesta Black Bean Bowl and a Veggie Fajita Bowl. Neither was available for sample, but should be on store shelves in January.
- Lillian’s Healthy Gourmet – has a line of frozen Tilapia in four flavors: Moroccan Style, Singapore Style, Southwest and Thai Style. Their entrees were not being sampled out at Expo East, but this Examiner will definitely investigate further.
- Starfish – is set to launch their Italian Breaded Sole. This product pairs Aleia’s bread crumbs with wild harvested Sole from the cold waters of Alaska. The sole is very soft and moist and the bread crumbs add the perfect flavor. The breading isn’t too thick and it sticks to the fish. Can’t wait for this new product to be available in Whole Foods.
- Dakota Prairie Flour Co. – has a line of gluten-free flours and mixes. They are a dedicated facility and do all of their own flour milling. This Examiner received samples of four of their mixes and will start baking and posting reviews soon!
- Quattrobimbi Imports, Inc – importers of Le Veneziane have just added a new organic gluten-free pasta made by Molino di Ferro called Le Asolane to their offerings. This pasta is made from organic corn flour and has a rich yellow color that is enhanced by its low fat content and is also characteristic of the ‘water’ used to produce the pasta. These shelf-stable authentic Italian pastas are available in shapes that are not readily available in the U.S. like: gnocchi, capellini, and an egg noodle to name a few. These products are not available in stores, but they can be ordered online via their website.
- Cheeky Monkey – organic peanut butter puffs that are GFCO certified, Kosher certified and packed with fiber and protein. These puffs were one of my favorite finds at the event and they should be in distribution and on store shelves soon. The company was literally launched the week of the show and it is: cholesterol free, trans fat free, sugar free, dairy/casein free, vegan and not fried.
- Go Picnic – this Examiner learned about this company from Cynthia Kupper about two years ago and has been thrilled with their ready-to-eat meals that are shelf stable, require no preparation and are nutritionally balanced. The company has changed its packaging and added more gluten-free options: Turkey Pepperoni and Cheese, Tuna and Crackers, Steak Nuggets and Cheese, Turkey Stick and Crunch, Peanut Butter and Crackers and Hummus and Crackers. These products should be in distribution and on store shelves soon. Until then, they can be ordered online from the company. A review of the Turkey Stick and Crunch will be posted soon.
- Pop Corners – popcorn shaped like a tortilla chip with the lightness and flavor of popcorn without getting any kernels stuck in your teeth. My favorite flavor was Kettle, but they also make white Cheddar, Butter, Cheesy Jalapeno and Sea Salt.
- Mini Pops – introduced whole grain organic popped sorghum that is more nutritious than popcorn. Popped sorghum has fewer calories, less fat and less sodium than corn and it is a healthful snack that is easier to digest than popcorn and it won’t get stuck in your teeth/gums. The product is GFCO certified and is it Kosher Certified.
- Tonya’s Gluten Free Kitchen – this is by far my favorite discovery at Expo East a gluten-free soft pretzel. The pretzels come six to a box with a separate package of salt and heating instructions. These pretzels are just the right size and they are not too hard, but have that great ‘pretzel’ taste this Examiner has been missing. The company also makes: white and cinnamon raisin bread, frosted banana bar, cinnamon and sugar soft pretzel, vanilla or peanut butter filled chocolate whoppie pies and 8″ pizza crusts. These products are currently only available in Pennsylvania, but this Examiner will do her best to get them down to Georgia.
- Kettle Cuisine – is launching a new soup flavor: Coconut Chicken Curry. This dairy-free soup has wonderful curry flavor with the right amount of ‘bite’. The chicken is cooked perfectly and the flavor combinations make for a warm, flavorful soup and a great addition to their impressive line of gluten-free soups. What this Examiner finds astounding is there soups are frozen, but manage to taste fresh.
