If you grew up in the 80’s you may remember watching the Solid Gold Dancers. In Girls just want to Have Fun, they have Chicago’s Dance T.V. Janey (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a regular army brat, but her one dream was always to make it to the windy city because that is where Dance T.V. is filmed. After she moves there, she learns that they are holding auditions for regulars on the show. She has performed in dance and gymnastics most of her life and this will be her chance to show it off. The only problem is she has a strict father, Colonel Glenn (Ed Lauter), who does not want her to spent her nights rehearsing in the city. Janey, being a good, Catholic high school girl, does what she is told. However, under the tutelage of her new friend, Lynne (Helen Hunt), she learns that rules are meant to be broken.
Although Janey is not supposed attend the dance audition, as the school bus pulls away the theme song, (Girls just want to Have Fun) begins to play and she gets on the bus with Lynne. Everyone at the auditions considers her a square peg because she wears her school uniform, but when she begins to dance her passion and skills emerge. She even catches the eye of public school guy, Jeff (Lee Montgomery), who becomes her dance partner. She learns to live a little by sneaking around to for fill her dream and spend time with Jeff. Unfortunately, sneaking out and lying to her parents has consequences.
Janey’s friend Lynne is the kind of friend you want in high school. She is fun, wild, and quick on her feet. She pushes Janey to go out for what she wants and helps her out of some sticky situations with her parents. However, her quick wit leads her to pick a fight with spoiled rich girl, Natalie (Holly Gagnier).Natalie also has her eyes on the prize and tries to prevent the girls from auditioning. To her surprise, Lynne’s philosophy is, ‘you know what’s better than getting mad, getting even.’ Which brings them to more mischief and exciting events.
This is a really fun and lighthearted movie. It is complemented by a great 80’s soundtrack. It will help you relieve some high school memories and make you want to get up and dance. Although, Helen Hunt went on to win an Oscar for As Good as it Gets, this is still one of her most memorable roles. Before Sarah Jessica Parker went toSex in the City, she was great as the innocent dancer, Janey. There is also a great supporting cast: Shannon Doherty, who plays, Maggie, Jeff’s bratty little sister and Jonathon Silvermanwho plays, Drew, Jeff’s obnoxious friend. You will also notice a cameo by a guy who appears to be Robert Downey Jr. At Natalie’s party a guy pulls the table cloth off a table and Robert Downey stands up from underneath the table. Although it is not listed in his accomplishments it is confirmed on IMDB message boards that it is him. It is also stated that Downey and Parker were dating around the time the movie was made. It is possible that this movie will be remade in (2012). It is still in the early stages, so the information is vague; but I hope it is not true.
Funny Scene: (Janey goes to the kitchen to get a snack after she sneaks out to meet Jeff. Her dad is sitting there in the dark.)
Colonel Glen: Can’t sleep?
Janey: (Startled) Oh God! Daddy, really, don’t do that.
Colonel Glen: (laughs) By the way why aren’t you in your PJS? It’s after midnight you know.
Janey: I was dreaming that I was going to be late for school, so I woke up and I got dressed; then I looked at the clock.
Colonel Glen: Yeah, but you wear a uniform to school and that’s not a uniform.
Janey: In my dream I went to public school.
