October promises Lighthouse Writers’ annual Inside the Writer’s Studio to be an engaging event. Previous Inside the Writer’s Studio guests have included: Lorrie Moore; Tobias Wolff; Mark Strand; Francine Prose; Lee Gutkind; Mark Irwin; Pattiann Rogers; and Chris Offutt. Following in the footsteps of these literary icons, this year’s honorary guest, is award winning author, Colson Whitehead. Whitehead’s work is highly praised and acclaimed by Jonathon Lethem, Bloomberg News, Walter Kim,The New York Times Book Review, Newsweek, Walter Mosley, Washington Post Book World, The New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, Pittsburg Post-Gazette, The Miami Herald, The Nation, The Village Voice, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and The Boston Globe. Whitehead’s essays, reviews and fiction have earned him a fellowship at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, as well as the Whiting Writer’s Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship. His works have earned the Quality Paperback Book Club’s New Voices Award, the Young Lions Fiction Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and the PEN/Oakland Award, as well as being a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (John Henry Days). His short works can be found in major publications, such as Harper’s, Granta, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, and the New York Times. In addition, Whitehead is the author of four novels, The Intuitionist, John Henry Days (2001), Apex Hides the Hurt (2006), and Sag Harbor ( 2009,Anchor), plus one nonfiction work, The Colossus of New York (2003). Lighthouse Writers are bringing Whitehead to Denver for this weekend of events, all the way from, (you guessed it), New York.
Inside the Writer’s Studio:Beyond Intuition will be held this year on the weekend of October 23 thru 24, and the itinerary is filled with events worth anticipating. Get an up close and personal look at Whitehead, in an unpredictable, unscripted interview onstage, by Lighthouse Writer staff, Eli Gottlieb, (author of Now You See Him and The Boy Who Went Away), at Jones Theater on Saturday, October 23, at 4:00 p.m. The cost for this event is $15.00 for members/ $20.00 for non-members. This event will be followed by an Intuitive Dinner and Drinks, at Tamayo Restaurant, at 1400 Larimer, at 7:00 p.m. The cost of $100.00 for members/ $140.00 for non-members includes a dinner of gourmet Mexican cuisine, drinks and stimulating literary conversation, with Whitehead as the guest of honor, of course.
Sunday, October 24 will feature several micro-lectures by Whitehead, on the second floor of the renowned Tattered Cover LoDo, at 10:30 a.m. Lecture topics to include style, craft and “what we can all learn from a Donna Summer version of MacArthur Park” (Lighthouse email, 9/15/2010). The cost for this event is $50.00 for members/$45.00 for non-members. An all inclusive Super-Intuition Pass may be purchased, to cover all three events for $150.00 for members/$185.00 for non-members.
