At Dover-Foxcroft, four different players scored goals for the Foxcroft Ponies as they defeated the Lee Academy Pandas by a score of 4-1. Foxcroft improves their record to 3-0-1. Ponies coach Glenn Hodgkinson is happy with the start of the season but he knows it is too early to get too excited. He said, “It is early.”
Lee Academy dominated the early part of the game. They scored the first goal just 1:20 after the game started. Nam Dang hit one of his head past Ponies goalie Kevin Leary. The goal was set up by a corner kick by Dustin Sawtelle. This was only the second goal the Ponies have given up this season. Hodgkinson said, “We have only conceded two goals this season, one at John Bapst, one here today. That goal today was from a set play, nothing we could do about that.”
The Pandas continued to control the ball for the next five minutes. Foxcroft made some adjustments and things started to turn around for the Ponies. Coach Hodgkinson said, “We started off slow. They were pushing down on our right back. I switched that around and it changed things around.”
Foxcroft had a great opportunity with 33:00 remaining in the first half. They had a breakaway and a shot on the goal, with Pandas goalie Devin Peters out of the goal, Sean Bates cleared the ball and kept the Ponies off the scoreboard. Lee Academy could not keep the Ponies off the board much longer. Jae Young Lee put the ball past Peters with 28:32 remaining in the first half to tie the score at 1. Lee had another opportunity about a minute later. This shot hit the goal post. Stephan Sharrow put the Ponies ahead with 11:44 remaining in the first half. Foxcroft went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Foxcroft continued their strong play in the second half. They controlled the majority of the final half. Lee did have some chances but were turned away by Leary each time. The best chance for the Pandas in the half came with 24:00 remaining. Mohammed Ben Mrad drove by the Foxcroft defenders and drilled a shot but Leary knocked the ball away.
With 22:01 remaining their was a loose ball in front of Peters and the Pandas goal. Colby Bombero put the ball past Peters to give the Ponies a 3-1 lead. Joel Massa finished off the scoring with 10 second remaining. The Ponies have plenty of different players that can score and four of those players did just that in today’s game. Coach Hodgkinson said, “We have goals on the team from many different areas. Our best goal scorer actually missed a complete setter. He never misses but that happens. Our center/midfield, who is probably our best creator was missing today. I was happy with the performance.”
Foxcroft will next play Saturday, when they host Bangor Christian on Saturday. Lee Academy fell to 2-1 with the loss. The Pandas will host Southern Aroostook on Friday.
