Fantasy Playoff Baseball: Rangers blow 5-point lead, Yankees win Game 1

by echo flam

The Texas Rangers blew a five-point lead, giving up a home run in the seventh and five more runs in the eighth to lose to the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the ALCS.

Texas Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson was magnificent through seven innings. After going three-and-out in the first two innings, he gave up his first hit and walk in the third inning. With men on first and second, Wilson worked his way out of the inning without any runs scored.

Texas led by the point 3-0, thanks to a Josh Hamilton three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the second inning. Sabathia only allowed two earned runs in his two ALCS starts for the Yankees last season.

Hamilton’s three-run homer in the first gave Texas more runs than it scored total in the 1998 and 1999 ALDS against New York. The Texas Rangers only scored one run total in those series, swept by New York both times.

Texas added two more runs in the fourth, off a Michael Young 2-run double. That ended the day for CC Sabathia.

The New York Yankees bullpen buckled down while the Texas Rangers bullpen blew the entire game.

Joba Chamberlain, Dustin Mosley, Kerry Wood and Mariano Rivera combined to only give up one hit over the next five innings. Moseley picked up the win while Mariano Rivera picked up his third save of the postseason.

In the seventh inning, Robinson Cano hit a solo home run off Wilson but the Rangers tried to stick with their starter for one inning too long.

Wilson gave up a single to Brett Gardner to start the seventh. Derek Jeter doubled in the next at-bat, scoring Gardner.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington finally called in the relievers. In a rough inning, Washington micromanaged the team, using four relievers including Darren O’Day, Darren Oliver, Clay Rapada and Derek Holland. The relievers combined to finish the game with three hits, two walks, one strikeout and gave up the four runs the New York Yankees needed to win the game.

Washington replaced Oliver after he gave up two walks and both O’Day and Rapada after they gave up a hit facing only one batter each.

“That was a classic example of us having a tough start for the first six innings,” said Rodriguez. “Then a great at-bat and a great slide gets us going.”
