UPDATE: Stars retro jerseys now on sale here!
It has been in the works for quite some time. Today we can officially announce that the Tacoma Stars professional indoor soccer club of the PASL (Premier Arena Soccer League) will honor the Stars clubs of the past by wearing specially-made jerseys this season that mirror the kits worn by the Tacoma Stars of the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) from 1983-1988.
Anyone who was a fan or knew of the Tacoma Stars of two decades ago will instantly recognize the diamond-patterned jerseys with the bright orange, blue and yellow of the Stars. The original Stars for some reason went away from wearing the diamond kits somewhere around 1989. The club folded after the 1992 season having switched to all blue or all white.
Tacoma Stars General Manager John Callaway says the retro jerseys are in going with the spirit of the old club, and the new directions of the current club.
“Because this is the first year back as a ‘Pro’ team,” Callaway says, “we wanted to honor the tradition laid before by the original Stars.”
There is already a growing buzz amongst the Stars players about opening night and putting on, then playing in, the kits that look so much like the originals of 1983. “The players reaction has been nothing but positive,” declares Callaway. “I believe the typical reaction from players has been “no way…that’s awesome!”
Furthermore, Callaway says “I believe the fans will love it. And yes, we are working on making the jerseys available for purchase.”
Th jersey mock-ups posted here suggest two sponsors: Click! TV and the Emerald Queen Casino. See the slide show at left for larger versions of the 2010-11 design and a look back at photos from when the original Stars wore the diamonds.
The Stars held open tryouts last weekend and had over 50 players at each of two sessions. Callaway is impressed with the talent that is interested in wearing the new / old jerseys for Tacoma this year.
The Stars will open their 2010-11 PASL-Pro season at the Tacoma Soccer Center on November 13th when they take on the first-year (indoor) Kitsap Pumas.
Everyone involved with this return to professional indoor soccer by the Stars knows the days of playing in the Tacoma Dome before huge crowds are only fond memories. However the current Stars are hopeful that 1,000-1,500 fans will pack the Tacoma Soccer Center for this year’s opener.
Now they are putting their jerseys where their hearts are, and where their futures look promising.
