Tuesday, Sept. 21
Support Animal Haven while munching on great food at BRGR (4038 W. 83rd St., Prairie Village). Visit during Yappy Hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for just $15. All proceeds benefit the animal shelter. Dogs are welcome on the patio.
Wednesday Sept. 22
The Whole Foods location at 91st Street and Metcalf in Overland Park will give 5 percent of its total sales on this day to Animal Haven.
Friday, Sept. 24/Saturday, Sept. 25
Local maurices stores are participating this month in the national clothing chain’s second annual Rescues & Runways campaign, held in partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The goals of this program include raising money and collecting supplies for area animal shelters and rescue groups. The KCK store (The Legends, 1837 Village West Parkway) is doing a pet-themed fashion show on Friday at 7 p.m. for Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter. And the Blue Springs maurices (Adams Dairy Landing, 1032 NE Coronado Dr.) will hold its own show on Saturday at 11 a.m.; proceeds go to Independence Animal Services. Bring a donation and you’ll get a store coupon.
Saturday, Sept. 25
Join Wayside Waifs in KCMO’s Brookside neighborhood for the 20th annual Strutt With Your Mutt from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. New this year are a cat walk, the Strutt 5K Fun Run and a one-mile Kids Run—all in addition to the traditional 3K Strutt Walk. See the complete schedule and register.
Representatives from the Kansas City Golden Retriever Club will be at the off-leash area in Heritage Park (16240 Lackman Road, Olathe) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with information about Goldens and dogs in general.
The Show Me Vizsla Club and the Mo-Kan Chapter of Quail Forever are hosting a non-gunning youth field trial in conjunction with National Hunting and Fishing Day. Club members will teach young hunters about pointing dogs and the responsibilities of owning them. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area (13101 S.E. Ranson Road, Lee’s Summit).
Northland Animal Welfare Society’s Wag & Wash Pet Adoption Day will be in the Zona Rosa Town Square (8640 N. Dixson Ave., KCMO) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Area rescue groups are bringing adoptable pets. Dog washes by Kathy’s Klippery and microchipping are available.
Got a “wiener dog”? Enter it in the Lee’s Summit Oktoberfest Wiener Dog Contest. Check-in begins at 11 a.m., with the event starting at noon on the main stage on Douglas Street. Get your application and contest details online.
Families who’ve adopted dogs from Animals Best Friends are welcome to a reunion picnic at Santa Fe Park (2801 S. Santa Fe Road, Independence) from 4 to 7 p.m.
Bands, Bingo, Beer, Burlesque for Bullies at The Brick (1727 McGee, KCMO) is a benefit show for Mid-America Bully Breed Rescue. It runs from 6 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. Featured artists include Tarkus Attacks!, The God Project, Smash the State! and Them Damned Young Livers, plus a burlesque show by Annie Cherry and Eartha Delights.
Sunday, Sept. 26
Enjoy pizza with your pooch at the SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza in KCMO (4950 Main St.) or Olathe (14230 W. 119th St.) during Ciao Bow Wow, a benefit for Wayside Waifs. Three Dog Bakery will provide a special pizza dinner and dessert for your dog, while you choose something from the “people menu.” The cost is $25 per pooch. Reservations are required and are only being taken online. Seatings begin at 4 p.m.
Retractable leashes aren’t safe in situations where many dogs are present. Please leave retractable leashes at home.
Online contest: How far would you go for your pet? Fetch! Pet Care will reward one winner who goes the distance for their pet with one week’s worth of Fetch! Pet Care services valued up to $500. To enter the contest, go here. Fetch! encourages you to post photos, videos or short descriptions that show how far you’ve gone or will go for your pet. Posts must include both the pet and you. Fetch! will pick one winner based on online votes and will announce the winner on Oct. 22.
