In this week’s Do It All Mamas and Papas spotlight – the dads behind Carousel Designs: Allan Sicat, president, and Jonathan Hartley, CEO.
Examiner: Tell me something unique/interesting about yourself.
Jonathan: I played team handball for the US National Team in 2000.
Examiner: What is your business all about?
Allan: At Carousel Designs, we understand that decorating your nursery is an exciting, fun, and very important part of preparing for your baby’s arrival and as a designer and manufacturer of crib bedding, we take our role in that preparation very seriously. Our goal is to ensure that every expectant mom who comes to us for her baby bedding gets exactly what she wants. Whether she falls in love with one of our distinctive crib bedding collections or gets inspired and uses our Nursery Designer to create the perfect custom bedding, she won’t have to compromise when it comes to the look and the quality she’s seeking for her baby’s first bedding. Our complete collection can be seen at babybedding.com.
Examiner: What is your favorite product that you make or sell and why do you like or recommend it?
Jonathan: Camoflauge Baby Blanket—it’s probably my favorite gift to all of my friends that have baby boys (and a lot of my friends are military or former military). Monogrammed it’s the perfect gift—soft but still macho!
Examiner: Why did you start your business?
Allan: The company was founded over 22 years ago. We took over the family business wanting to continue the company’s tradition of success. We felt that we could dramatically change the baby bedding shopping experience by leveraging emerging technologies while keeping our “Made in the USA” commitment. In addition to providing innovative, classical, and modern design ideas through our extensive fabric selection, we knew that we could help any expectant mom visualize their perfect nursery from the comfort of their own home. This motivation lead us to the development of our Nursery Designer® and helped define the future of Carousel Designs.
Examiner: What secret do you have to share with other parents about “having it all” with your family and business?
Jonathan: It’s easy for your business to use up all or most of your time and energy. You must make a point to balance work and your personal life. Business is incredibly important but life is too short to miss out on the moments that truly matter.
Examiner: What is the number one piece of advice you have for other parents?
Allan: Patience is a virtue. Every child is truly different in their own special way. When it comes to teaching or disciplining, a common successful technique may or may not work for your child. Kids are deceivingly smart and will constantly push the limits to test you. Be patient and cherish every moment you have with these little people.
Examiner: What is your (and your kids) favorite family activity?
Jonathan: Spending a day at the beach is probably everybody’s favorite. Only problem is that it only happens one or two times per year.
Examiner: Anything else you want to add?
Allan: Having families ourselves, we understand how important this occasion is for expectant parents. Our goal is to provide each and every one of our customers a memorable and extraordinary experience during this special time!
