Planning your dining for your Halloween trip to Salem is dependent upon if you are adventurous or very conservative in your taste. You will find Greek, Italian, Mediterranean, sea food, and lots of desserts but what you won’t find is chain restaurants within the city. The city likes to keep the city as close to unique and historical as possible, therefore the only chain restaurant that I have found there are Dunkin Donuts and Wendy’s. So if you have children or picky eaters please be prepared to be around these areas around eating time.
As I said, most of the restaurants are owned by locals with local or culture food. The best places to eat are:
- In the Mall
- Capt’s Waterfront Grill
- Essex’s New York Deli
- Brother’s Deli
But, be warned – many of these restaurants only take CASH. I know Red’s is one and they are very rude to you if you are not aware. I had a very bad run in with the waitress when I tried to explain the situation and send someone to the ATM machine to get cash. But, they were very rude.
There are lots of little vendors on the street and they taste really good. And let’s not forget the tasty candy and sweets. They are everywhere but don’t forget to get the Fried Elephant Ears to eat as you go up and down the street.
Cost of most meals are about $8 per person for the pizza and deli type restaurants. The more fancy sit down restaurant can range from $9 per meal to $25 for exotic seafood dishes.
