Most of the time, I review and report on new venues, performances, new releases, well known Country Music artists and events. This time, I chose just to surf to uncover undiscovered talent. It’s like a treasure hunt that may or may not come up with anything. But, this hunt did discover a hidden prize – Clint Taft & the Buck Wild Band. And as I said, it’s just a hunch from a well educated ear.
Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band is one of those bands that doesn’t have a CD, nor huge Music Awards, but they are becoming one of the hottest acts in South Texas. So, here I dive in, just to review Clint Taft and his Buck Wild Band, because sometimes it’s just as important to listen to the blending of vocals and sounds, original tracks or not. And, I simply do this because I believe in finding and promoting those bands who are soon to be on the big scene. And with songwriting currently in motion, selecting the perfect songs and final master crafting, Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band are on their way to a debut album soon to come.
Saturday, September 7th, Clint and group will be performing at Ingleside’ (near Corpus Christi) Backwoods Saloon. Just by seeing the My Space page for the Backwoods, the outside glory of the eclectic building and pictures, you can bet it’s guaranteed that that place will be rockin’ heavy, along with Backwoods Saloon’s mechanical bull, “Ribeye” and Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band.
The band is currently tearing up South Texas and performing at dance halls, night clubs, festivals, special events and opening shows for Deryl Dodd, David Lee Garza, Jason Allen and Cory Morrow. If they weren’t good, they wouldn’t be the awesome Country Music artists’ opening bands.
Clint and guys also had the privilege of performing as part of a full-scale stage New Braunfels musical of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas at the Brauntex Theatre. In addition to these accomplishments, the band won the Seguin Freedom Fiesta’s Battle Of The Bands in 2007 and performs at the San Antonio Cowboy Breakfast.
With homebase in the San Antonio area, this high-energy band performs current & classic country, rock and various styles in between. All band members bring vast experience from years of playing on the Texas Dance Hall Circuit. Clint Taft – Vocals, Guitar; Denny Fleury – Vocals, Guitar; Jon Delpho – Vocals, Bass; Ronnie Maha – Vocals, Drums; Sam Moreno – Vocals, Sound.
Clint Taft, who plays Acoustic Guitar and lends some real Texas Country vocals, which seem to be able to exact any song he sings with ultimate accuracy as do several other band members. I can’t wait to hear their original songs!
Clint lives in Seguin, Texas and has been playing music for eight years and was in the band “Southern Justice.” As for his interests in music, he notes the greats of Eddie Rabbitt, Marty Robbins, Ronnie Milsap, George Strait and The Beach Boys. And Clint’s heart is definitely in old country, new country and simply Texas Music! He also has the heart and showmanship on stage as an actor, with one of his most memorable moments being the Balladeer and playing music in a stage musical of the Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. And this shows in his performances!
The rest of the band is just as vocal in their passion for Texas Music and their roots! Denny Fleury has been playing his music for over 20 years and lives in La Vernia, Texas. Just a list of his band memberships — The Texas Rebels, The SideWinders, The Road Closed Band, The System, Rick Reyna and Diamond T, Lance Allen & High Country, Psychedelic Jukebox, Detour. Um, I should have left out the Psychedelic Jukebox, but perhaps that gives the band that extra power and spark!
Denny Fleury loves to play 80’s Rock and New Country as his own influences “My Dad, Brent Mason, Brad Paisley, Eddie Van Halen and Keith Urban.” Again, a little Van Halen never hurt to give a kick to Country Music! Denny, as all good gentlemen must do, refuses to reveal is most memorable musical experience. “As long as we keep jammin’ and having a great time – that’s our minimum goals. Of course, the ultimate goal is far into the stratosphere!”
Then there is bass guitarist and vocalist, John Delpho who lives in San Antonio. He has been playing music also for 20+ years. His bands included Mark Winston Kirk, Martin Bomba and 35 South, Rick Reyna and the Texas Outlaws, Ricky Calmbach, Shawn Allen. I’ve also sat in with several local bands like Patrick Glenn, Robert Demel etc. And, here we go again with some heavy metal “I like lot of heavy metal Bass Players, Steve Harris, Rudy Sarzo etc.- But, I also musically like a lot of stuff that has a good strong groove and heart so, some Ray Price, Steve Earle, Bodeans, Cruzados that kinda stuff. Real songs.” Yes, definitely real songs! And throughout the years, John Delpho, has focused on leaning towards “sraight-up or older country, but I still like to rock out too. I guess I’ll never get that out of my blood. So, pretty much I’m up for it all!”
John continues, “I’ve opened up for some really great guys, Kevin Fowler, Cory Morrow, Mark Chestnutt, David Lee Garza, etc. so, I guess playing in front of a crowd and being able to really pump them up and get ‘em dancin’. I REALLY love it when the crowd’s into it. That’s the best.” The main goal, says John, “Is to have fun. That’s what it’s really all about. When it stops being fun, call the hearse ‘cuz I’m done!”
Now, we have Ronnie Mahaon drums and vocals who also hails from La Vernia, Texas! ( I love the number of talented vocalists in Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band!) And they are all great! As far as how long he’s been playing music – he is definitely the senior artist of the group, with 35 years to his credit. His bands? Driftwood, Lance Allen & High Country, Detour, Rick Reyna & Diamond T, The Road Closed Band .
And again, the rock influence with Ronnie, who loves to play ‘80’s Rock, Southern Rock and New Country! Alex Van Halen, Bobby Jarzombek, all good drummers. Ronnie won, pretty much hands down, with his most memorable moment being sharing the stage with BROOKS AND DUNN! Ronnie’s favorite saying is “As long as it’s rockin’, keep going!”
Next up is Sam Moreno on vocals and a master Sound Engineer from Lake McQueeney, Texas, playing his music for over 14 years. Sam has been a part of the bands of County Line, Hal Barricks & Texas Edge, Rick Reyna & The Texas Outlaw Band, Wildcard, Texas, Southern Justice, and Kevin Fowler. His inflluences are intense – Johnny Cash, John Cougar Mellencamp and and hilarious — Jack Black?
You also have to love Sam’s favorite type of music: Texas Country and 80’s Hair Bands, and when it comes to a most memorable musical experience, it’s a close tie with his other bandmates – “Playing a benefit in Austin when I was with Kevin Fowler and running sound for Johnny Rodriguiez, Rick Trevino, Kevin Fowler and Cory Morrow at the event.
And all Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band’s number one priority? “To get our CD done and get a bus… a very big one!”
My job is to review Texas Country Music in my areas – big news and stars, events and great venues. In five years or less into the future, I may have done just that. Check out Clint Taft & The Buck Wild Band! You’ll hear the birth of of a great Texas Country music band that has the ability to go for the gold if the songwriting fits this band’s capabilities.I ‘m betting that the songwriting, songs and delivery match their passion. Just a hunch, but sometimes my hunches are pretty reliable. We’ll see.
